Band of Brothers Episode 9 Reaction

there has never been and there will never be an episode thats harder to watch than this one

Band of Brothers Episode 9 Reaction

Comments

The only reason I exist is because the US Army liberated my grandfather from a Nazi death camp (Dachau).

Victor Kaps

I am feeling guilty for making you watch this and I only just found this channel in the last two weeks. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of such a tough but brilliant show to watch.

Paul Slavich

Can't wait for the final! Gotta watch the Pacific after

Jae

I’m just waiting for the sequel of band of brothers and the pacific to be made called “masters of the air”! It’s about the air force 😎

Kj

I've never noticed that first guy was speaking Serbian and I know that now thanks two. And if it weren't for you two I defiantly wouldn't ever have known what he was saying. Thank you for that and please never forget.

CoFro

You might need to go outside and away from the keyboard for a bit

Cameron

sorry but you're a bit delusional if you think people have to watch a show/movie to understand what a genocide is. the show is great but by no means it's something mandatory. there's quite a lot ww2 movies and shows, specially becsuse it's one of the only ones where the americans are not the bad guys. you bringing up how their country is leaning towards russia's side as if they could do something? lean on the right side of history, lol, what do you expect from them, to go to russian or ukraine and stop the war with their own hands? besides, we don't know anything about their lives except their sofas and opinions on shoes and what they tell us, so it's definitely not enough to judge a person from your own house just because it's hard for them to watch a show.

sand_fl

I see you would have fallen right in line with Goebbel's propaganda.

Jane Lowell-Shaw

They're 'reclaiming' it as Germans.

Jane Lowell-Shaw

Seeing how ridiculous these responses are I stand by my statement tenfold. Genocide again is happening on your doorstep and you're outraged by ME for reminding you? I see this show is wasted on all of you.

Jane Lowell-Shaw

The cancer patients who played camp prisoners weren't necessarily Jewish, at least there is no information to either confirm or deny it. The musicians I was talking about are the people from the opening and closing sequence playing Beethoven.

Andrew

> be jewish > have terminal cancer > get thrown into a concentration camp because Spielberg wants to film something They just can't take a break, can they...

Orr Malus

True haha

Nikodem

Perhaps "reclaiming" isn't the proper term, I wouldn't know which one to use though in this case. I don't think there is a word in English for "'taking something that's been used as a propaganda device against your people and using it as a tool to empower your people" :D

Andrew

Thank you for clarifying, that's definitely a nice gesture from the showrunners, but that's not I meant. It's just that I wouldn't call that reclaiming, unless Beethoven's music or that specific piece somehow belonged to the Jews before the Nazis started using it for propaganda. I will check out the podcast later and maybe I will understand what you mean more.

Nikodem

All the musicians you see in the episode are Jewish. It's confirmed by John Orloff in Band of Brothers podcast from a year ago on HBO Max. You can find it on their YouTube channel.

Andrew

Why would they "reclaim" Beethoven's music for themselves? He was not a Jew.

Nikodem

If you enjoyed The Leftovers, then I can’t recommend Station Eleven or Six Feet Under enough. Just phenomenal programming that gets what being human is about.

orlanmop _

Yo this is *extremely* condescending and dismissive of what they've already expressed when it comes to watching this show. Who are you to lecture them about any of this? Take it down by about 80%.

Phoenix Spaulding

A little bit of trivia: 1. Many of the extras playing concentration camp inmates were actually cancer patients undergoing treatment, hence their emaciated look. Steven Spielberg insisted on using them to make the scene look as realistic as possible. 2. This is Tom Hardy's first appearance in any sort of acting role. 3. (at around 50 mins) Winters mentions that the Soviets liberated a camp much worse than the one encountered by Easy company, one ten times as big with execution chambers and ovens. He is referring to the infamous Auschwitz labor/extermination camp liberated by the Soviets on January 27, 1945. 4. In the concentration camp the soldiers notice tattooed ID numbers. This indicates those prisoners were in Auschwitz at one point as it was the only camp that tattooed prisoners. 5. The episode states that the opening and end sections take place on April 11th, however Captain Nixon in the last few minutes states that Hitler is dead. This would be incorrect as Hitler would not commit suicide until April 30th 1945. John Orloff, the writer of this episode later said the original script had the correct date, but the production assistants made an error when writing the title and it wasn't caught on until the episode actually got released. 6. During the Second World War, the Nazis systematically used Beethoven's music for their political purposes. The musicians you see at the beginning and the end of the episode playing Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 are Jews who had been in hiding and with the city liberated they took to the streets to play Beethoven to reclaim his music for themselves. This is probably my favorite bit about this episode.

Andrew

As well as using cancer patients for the prisoners, the main cast was kept away from the set until the day they started filming so that their reactions to it all would be more genuine and shocked.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

delete this and unsub from the patreon bestie

Kara

I would love for them to react to The Leftovers but they said in one of the videos from maybe a year ago that they had seen it already.

Andrew

Watching this at the same time as Vinland saga is dangerous

milcasa21

If it hasn’t been decided on what to follow after this series’s finale, if y’all would like to continue down the HBO limited series hole, then I can’t recommend Station Eleven enough. It sounds corny, but it’s a very human show/experience among the likes of The Leftovers & Six Feet Under.

orlanmop _

Hey. I cried with you. Episode 10 is not so bad, it's kinda a nice finale

tom

I am not going to spoil anything, but, LM, if you see this comment, you got through the worst. Episode 10 (and the documentary if you watch that)......you will be fine. I think you will be happy that you watched both. I loved your commentary. Take care.

BobJ

I'd seen the episode already a couple of weeks prior, but when the company pulled into the camp my heart started racing and I got chills as though I were watching it all over again. When you said "it's our language" I had to pause the reaction for a while to gather myself. Same for during your review when you told us of your proximity to one of the camps, and how you don't know anyone who's jewish in your country. A very close friend of mine is jewish and of polish descent, her great-grandparents were extremely lucky to have been able to flee in time. I've been to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin, and I've watched a considerable amount of documentaries and have read a lot in relation to the holocaust, and the horror of it only ever gets worse. The word 'horror' doesn't begin to describe it, trying to use words to describe the holocaust feels like an insult in and of itself. I agree with the sentiment that this absolutely needs to be seen by everyone, especially when holocaust denial and general antisemitism is as rampant as ever 80 years later. There's a certain amount of comfort we shouldn't be allowed to have. Ignorance toward the Shoah is one such comfort.

TeaDrinker3000

@Jay Craig That's and understatement the fact that they are bringing irl world politics into this. It isn't weather you agree or disagree with the above comment this is just not the right place to bring it up.

Melkor

I understand why you dont wanna watch Schindelrs list but if I may you are missing out on some 12/10 movies and shows then. Schindlers list is art in terms of movie making and quality and I can say after Schindlers list something will have changed for you. Probably the best Holocaust movie out there and in general one of the best history movies iv'e seen ever.

Melkor

This is a wildly inappropriate thing to post.

Jay Craig

Remind me again who funds the Azov Battalion and what their beliefs are? Remind me again who was Stepan Banderra and what his organization, the OUN, did?

Orr Malus

I understand your reactions. I do. This is some of the most difficult viewing out there- not least because you have now (hopefully) become invested in these characters and their trajectory throughout this horrific war. But you need to process why it was so important for you to watch this and why you need to reconsider why you presumably think television should only be there to entertain you. It's almost frustrating to watch you seem almost aggrieved that this show was somehow forced on you. It's time to reflect what this history has taught you. Every bit of this and so, SO much more of this was experienced by this group of American soldiers. Whatever pain you're now feeling is infinitesimal to what your Serbian ancestors felt in those camps. This is why you need to feel this now. This is why none of us should escape our painful histories. We should be so grateful that there are filmmakers able to convey this to us. And, lastly, we should reflect that history is not the past. The very insidious hatreds that you so eloquently reflected on are now spreading rapidly in Russia and as far as I can tell, Serbia is leaning on their side. It's time again to lean in on the ride side of history, girls. I can only hope you're up for it.

Jane Lowell-Shaw

You got through the worst. After next episode is over, you will be so glad you watched this series

BobJ

Even though it's hard to watch, it's very very important to see. To never, ever forget. Ever. Edit: and I also want to say that it's been 21 years since this aired on TV and 21 years since I first saw it. But this is the first time I've known that the first words the prisoners speak are Serbian. And I know that this show has been difficult for you girls to watch, and many times it's been uncomfortable viewing, seeing it with you has been a rewarding experience and today I learned something I never new before... About the show and about the camps in Belgrade. So despite the difficulty you have had in watching it, thank you for watching it.

Caomhan84

Just because I'm aware of my wrong doings doesn't mean I regret them. :P

Melkor

@Melkor i love history too but damn, i struggle with movies/shows like this ngl. i've been putting off watching the schindler's list because i know it's going to destroy me. sophie's choice is one of the most draining movies i've ever watched too. i know that this was not the biggest genocide that's ever happened but it's for sure the one that has been portrayed more and it's always an extremely difficult thing for me to watch.

sand_fl

I cried like crazy first time I saw this episode. Now iv'e seen this show so many times im not affected emotionally much at all anymore and just watch it from a objective history analytical perspective (im a very extreme history nerd) but I can understand all you first timers because this was horrible the first time I watched it. My deepest respect to you for surviving the episode.

Melkor

Yeah.. if I can describe this episode in one word is just pain.

Jack SV

@Melkor i know 😭 i knew what i was getting into when i started the show but i couldn't imagine it would be this hard ti watch. i actually finished the show a couple weeks ago. it was worth it and it was a fantastic show, but i would never rewatch this. not for reactions or anything. it was too hard and draining. i still need to see the documentary though. waiting to see if they react to it so i can watch along. i started watching the show along with them but it was difficult to follow both of them at the same time because of how it's filmed.

sand_fl

I hope after next epidose you will still say this was worth it and just a headsup the last epidsode is the least hard to watch episode in the show. So there won't be well what its been so far next episode.

Melkor

Well that sounds like a you problem. :P

Melkor

@Melkor i'm actually considering skipping the full altogether and watch just the edited because idk if i can stomach watching this episode again. this was horrible to watch and i ended up with a horrible headache from crying. i blame you all because i probably wouldn't have watched this if it weren't for them and they wouldn't have reacted to it if it weren't for your recs 😂 this is on you all

sand_fl

I knew this episode was coming so I made a little pick-me-up: https://i.imgur.com/Widfo1d.png

Orr Malus

Biggest bullet ever dodged I'd say. lol

Melkor

Intresting fact: They used cancer patiens (undergoing treatment) to act as the jews in the camp which is why it looks even more horryfing since the baldness and dead apperances.

Melkor

at least you know

LM Reactions

Oh no the dreaded episode has arrived. We are evil for making you watch this.

Melkor

i can imagine. this drained me for at least 2 days. you mentioned in the vinland reaction you were going to film bob after it but then you decided you wouldn't... you dodged a bullet there, because if you watched this right after arleady being emiontionally exhausted from vinland this would have demolished you.
