Violet Evergarden Episode 5 Reaction

Violet Evergarden Episode 5 Reaction

Comments

@kya Also, as Terry said, the writer is a woman, so you are completely off with demonizing men. Also also, men being with younger women isn't "fetishisation" it's simply that they like a woman who is younger. It is completely normal for men to like younger women. That's like calling women liking older men a fetish. It makes no sense and is littered in your personal feelings being involved, given that for all of human history, men have liked younger women, and women have liked older men. It will never change because we are hard wired that way.

Dalek

@kya The problem with your comment, is that it's based on your feelings. But everyone's feelings are different. So what you find gross, others don't. The only thing we can go off of for any argument, is if it's legal. Otherwise it's irrelevant, because you thinking it's gross will never stop it from being completely fine.

Dalek

i love this show to death but the same thing is true in relation to violets age idk why they couldnt have revealed her age to be a young adult at this point. it wouldnt take anything away from the story

Amber

Like many people here it seems, I'm not really sure why the writer(s?) went with this extreme an age gap between the princess and prince. There probably had to be some age gap for their dynamic to work, but it certainly didn't need to be ten years, 2-3 could have worked. Still potentially uncomfortable, but at least easier to swallow with them being royalty and the time period the show seems to be based off of. It's not unrealistic necessarily, but neither would them being closer in age be, so why do it that way if it's not key to the story?

Jacob

Also the show never really confirmed if the love between Violet and the major to be parental love or romantic love, they keep it ambiguous until the very end so you can chose to view it either ways and I think viewing it as a parental love is the best way to enjoy the show.

Markub El Jaden

I didn't actually read them, but apparently Violet is supposed to be 17/18 in the novels, but the anime changed that to 14? I don't know why, but for me I just consider her to be 17/18 years old since it sounds more realistic than being 14.

Markub El Jaden

I honestly don't think the ending of Ranking of Kings is horrible, but there are definitely really baffling elements. Some of my favorite scenes are towards the end too, so I wouldn't say it's so bad you should stop early. But there are weird questionable parts and ultimately it sours the season a bit. It's definitely disappointing for something that starts so strong.

Payam Sharifi

Frieren is also pretty good for female centrist anime, most of the important characters are also women and the story and art is really beautiful.

BigSaberBro

I keep hoping they’ll do Puella Magi Madoka Magica. But I’d also love for them to check out things like Fruits Basket too.

cosmotron

Psycho Pass is great, I like the writing style. Serial Experiments Lain is a classic... that song is still haunting =o

Mannygogou

@Kya but the fact that the writer is woman

terrier

I'm currently reading 20th century boys and it's sooo good I will love to see an anime adaptation! I know they said that they are going to watch rok after violet but i'm hoping that pluto can come first since it's shorter and it will be better to watch it as soon as possible to give it more views.

A point of contention about the age of consent in Japan that most Westerners do not realize. "Age of consent" in places like Japan does not mean "I can have sex with this person without worrying about going to jail" like how the US uses the term. Age of consent is the age a person is legally allowed to get married. Most nations with strong conservative Christian family values have the age of consent of 14. This includes Serbia but I'm willing to bet a lot of money that not even Milena and Lola were aware of this. I wasn't aware of this either until I went into an anime-induced rabbit hole. This is because, again, it's not about intercourse but marriage. Culturally when the man is even only 3 years older than the woman it's seen in a very unfavorable light. Japan is even more hardcore, South Korea as well from what I've seen in their movies. So when they're talking about kids (14 year olds) as being "adults" it means for them "they're of age to legally make certain decisions for themselves". It's doesn't mean "the age you can engage in debauchery legally".

Orr Malus

well i don't want to spoil you but yeah the writing was really bad at the end in my opinion. Some characters decisions didn't make any sense and were very problematics, I was so mad because it was such an amazing story and they just ruined it at the end :(

sakurabraus

They said they are reacting to ranking of kings but after that they have to react to pluto its really good. (Hope pluto gets so big that creators will have a reason to animate another Urasawa masterpiece 20th century boys)

Jorginho

It's a Ms. Writer.

Robert H.

That is probably one of the biggest differences from the West. But Japan has also changed here. Recently, Japan's age of consent was raised from 13, among the world's lowest, to 16 years old.

Robert H.

Hi guys , I hope you react to anime PLUTO , it came out on Netflix these days and it's really unmissable 🥹🫶🏻🫶🏻

Yeah I forgot this episode was coming lol. Very controversial subject as you can tell but at least most of us agree that this is very uncomfortable.

Jack SV

18/28 is still a really gross age gap imo. Honestly until you turn like 23/24 I think any age gap of 10 years or more is seriously problematic, as there's still a serious power imbalance there with everything from financial security to your brain being fully developed. The fetishisation of youth from men is something that never fails to gross me out in real life and in media, so wish the people in charge of the anime had done the opposite of what they did here and age everyone up a bit.

Kya Colosseum

Absolutely agree with Psycho Pass. Think if they did react to it though they should only do the first season, as the quality drops off considerably afterwards imo.

Kya Colosseum

@fbi

RH

There is a relationship near the end that becomes... problematic to say the least. All in all RoK is solid for a majority of its run, definitely starts off stronger than it finishes.

ridleymon

i skipped this Ep, Japan be like this sometimes. HxH as well has similar problem, unfortunately you just kinda gotta look past it. show is legit great otherwise

Suil123

Unrelated to violet but honestly this episode grossed me out so I'm not sure I'll be able to watch your reaction... Anyway I'm here to tell you that Pluto is out and it's amazing!! You definitely have to watch it after violet, for multiple reasons. First, it's really short, there are only 8 episodes of fifty minutes each. Second, it's a Naoki Urasawa's manga, the one who wrote Monster so as you will not be able to react to monster until one year or two, Pluto is the perfect occasion to discover the writing of this amazing storyteller! And finally, Pluto is one of my favorite saga ever and I'm sure you'll love it since it touches subjects that are important to you. So it's a must watch and I hope you'll consider it ^^

sakurabraus

I had watched Ranking of Kings only the first 10 episodes so far. I know the ending wasn't a 10/10 now, but is the ending really bad? And what is the controversial element of the story?

Robert H.

Also don't think it's a spoiler, since he appeared in episode 2, but the guy at the end is Gilbert's brother who captured Violet before the war.

terrier

Society norms and laws are changing very fast, pretty sure some things that are normal for us now will be considered immoral in 200 years, doesn't mean we are bad people. Even if you think about it, just in 4 years they will be like 18/28, which is considered legal today.

terrier

Yeah this is so easily the worst episode. I still can't say I consider it a BAD episode, as it's still quite good outside of the age gap, but that just makes it so hard to get into any of the good elements. Like why couldn't it have just been two adults?

Payam Sharifi

I adore Ranking of Kings outside of a few story decisions towards the end and yeah what you're referring to is SO bizarre, I have no clue why the writer thought it would be a good idea.

Payam Sharifi

The ending of ranking of kings disappointed me so much. And I'm pretty sure they will not like it either...

sakurabraus

In the anime, it's also a father-daughter relationship. That's probably one of the biggest changes from the book.

Robert H.

Agree with you completely. Adult anime would be like you mentioned Monster, but also Psycho Pass (Season 1), Mushishi, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, Rainbow Nisha and Usagi Drop (anime only, no one mentions the arc afterwards in the manga).

Robert H.

It was never said in the anime, but yes: Violet and Gilbert are also 8-12 years apart. In the book, it's pretty much exactly 10 years. But the anime takes a completely different route with Violet and Gilbert's relationship anyway. When we get to that point, maybe we can go into a little more detail about how different the story is.

Robert H.

I hate that trash in a lot of fantasy anime. It's one of the reasons why I avoid this genre almost completely.

Robert H.

I also saw her as more 14-17, so more 16 than about 14. I think Kyoto Animation when they adjusted the script, but didn't really adjust the character design. If you look at the Announcement Trailer, which still adapted the Light Novel exactly, Violet looked the same but was 17-20. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CJeDetA45Q

Robert H.

We've already indirectly discussed this episode in the comments here on Patreon before. This episode is very controversial and many don't like it, including me. I also thought about skipping this one, but I think the discussion will be very interesting. To put it in perspective, this episode is a story from the third book and actually has the meaning to show how important peace is and how big the price will be for it + to address something else. Here, however, the story feels a bit out of order, as the importance of peace has not been shown. I completely agree with you that in the anime they should have adjusted the age of the characters from the book. Violet is more like 14-17 at the start in the anime, and 17-20 in the book, and Charlotte could have been set at 16 and Damian at 20 and it would have been a nice story. Now that at least the episode is over, we're approaching the best part of Violet Evergarden. I'm really looking forward to the next episodes.

Robert H.

I really like Pyscho Pass. As someone who generally dislikes anime, I think that show does as good a job as any at feeling like a live-action series. Cool premise, interesting characters. It's not perfect (no anime is) but it's one of my favourites for sure, and a great female protagonist to boot.

Aj

Light vague Ranking of Kings spoilers. It's funny that both poll options ended up having similar problems that would bother them. I voted against Ranking of Kings because I felt they wouldn't like certain aspects later in the story and it ended up being in Evergarden also

HeavenlyR

I'd like to throw out some recommendations for shows with female protags. Psycho-Pass is one I'm surprised doesn't get mentioned as much, it was pretty cool from what I remember (such a good op too). Not sure if it'd be up their alley but Serial Experiments Lain is super good. Some newer ones to note would be Wonder Egg Priority, Heavenly Delusion, and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! I thought Wonder Egg was really cool but kind of a mess in its second half, and Heavenly Delusion was great but I found certain content to be kind of gross in how it was handled tbh. Eizouken is just one of the best modern anime and the three protagonists are super fun and endearing, though kind of like Lain, not sure if that's the kind of show they'd typically watch on here since its more of a comedy than anything. Fuck it I'll throw one more in, Aggretsuko is class. More people should watch Aggretsuko.

ridleymon

You're probably right TeaDrinker, but I like that about him lol. So yeah, my first language is Spanish actually (I'm from Buenos Aires), but I've been speaking English for a long time now. First time I quit a reaction halfway through, I guess I'll finish it tomorrow (I'm gonna go out for a few drinks with a couple of friends to cheer up a bit)

HenryM

Sorry this probably isn't the time but I never would have guessed English is your second language! You definitely speak it better than Eddie Vedder sings it lol

TeaDrinker3000

What Orr Malus said above. Yall do realize there's a such thing as kids watching these shows right? I get that we grown up now but most of these shows are targeted towards a younger audience. Why is Gon 12? Why is Naruto 12? Why is Aang 12? Nobody said shit when they were around that age. You want mature show? Watch something thats more geared towards adults (Like Monster for example). Im not saying you cant watch these shows if you're an adult. Hell I watch shonen shows still at 25. But you gotta realize that theres a target demographic the show is aimed towards. No matter how much you slice it, 80% or more of anime is geared towards a younger audience.

Danny

I can't believe it man, 54 years old, 3 years older than my father... I used to watch Friends religiously when I was teen, it's the main reason I learned English in the first place

HenryM

I was literally in the club when I saw that.

Darrach

I was in the middle of your reaction and got a news notification that Matthew Perry died?! what the absolute fuck?! I can't even concentrate on the episode now

HenryM

I was a young teen when I watched this and was not too bothered by the age gap at the time. But rewatching it now as a young adult, it's pretty off-putting. I still honestly love the series but now I kind of wish I still had that blocked that out. The moments in this show are some of the best and most powerful but I literally was skipping through your reaction because I felt how you guys felt while watching and it was rubbing off on me. I hope seeing you guys watching future episodes in a more positive light will shake this feeling.

Komikall

I wonder the same thing

Camelot B

Target audience size. To appeal to a certain public the main character has to have the age of the target demographic. This is an universal law in storytelling. The largest and most profitable demographic are the post-pubescent to young adult group (shonen and up in anime terms). This is because they have money to spend, no responsibilities, burgeoning mental sophistication, and a lot of free time. From what I understand Violet Evergarden was originally a novel which means the target demographic will lean more towards the young adults. Thus Violet's age has to reflect this. Anime's in general tend to appeal to younger crowds, not to mention the viewership is astronomically higher compared to novels. Therefore Violet's age has to be younger in the cartoon.

Orr Malus

Yea I agree I ask this about 80% of anime’s

Jay

In anime when a female character looks like an underage child there's a 50/50 chance she's over 3000 years old.

Orr Malus

There's a few aspects of this anime where I just wonder...why couldn't they have made the characters older? It's always been a real undermining element of an otherwise incredible show for me - like just age them up, they don't even look like the age they're said to be, so why go there? I'll never get it

Alex Doyle

"back then it was normalized for some odd reason" It still is. Leonardo DiCaprio, Johnny Depp, Elon Musk, Brad Pitt, and it goes on, and on, and on. For royal families it is excusable because that's their whole point for existing. Marriage is not about them, it is (was) about foreign affairs. Practically speaking these two would have gotten married even if she was 30 and him 16.

Orr Malus

In the novels, Violet is estimated to be 17 - 18yrs old. In the anime, they estimate her to be 14. Not sure why they made this change. Especially considering that she actually looks older.

ODIS

I never compared it to Gilberts/Violets relationship, I always saw theirs as more of a father/daughter love.

Daniel Constantine

It's called iq average is lower back in the day. They do a lot of weird shit. Though since this is just a tv show, I usually give it a pass. He seems to be a good person and the princess likes him. Especially since the princess chose this marriage herself. It's not technically "arranged" considering she was the one that arranged it. But yeah, irl it's not a good look. I mean, is it always bad? Probably not. I'm sure there's happy couples out there with age gaps. Should it be encouraged? No

Danny

Gilbert is “grown ass man” years old 😅

Daniel Molina

well... kinda scared because i haven't had the time to watch the episode yet and it seems like it's going to be a wild one

sand_fl

I remember when this episode first came out, it was the only controversial one among the show. Many people hated it many people liked it and many were in the middle. I was personally in the middle I didn’t like it, but I didn’t hate it either given the context. Especially since this show takes place way back when stuff this like use to happen especially to a princess who’s forced to marry for political reasons. Unfortunately that was just how things were back then. A perfect example is my grandma and grandpa. My grandpa was 26 and my grandma 16 when they married it’s NOT RIGHT obviously, but back then it was normalized for some odd reason.

Jay

“Well Mr. Writer, is this how you get your sick kicks?” “What? It’s just an ordinary episode of Violet Evergarde-OH MY GOODNESS!”

My Toasty Toast

Still cant believe this beat ranking of kings but im actually enjoying it
