The Wire 3x07 Full Reaction

Comments

Did you say this without thinking of Vito Spatafore?

FuzzyDunlop

I appreciate you being direct about this, I agree that generalizing is counter-productive Wanna clarify that I didn’t say it was “just cause of racism” that white people fled. I listed Baltimore specific issues including quality of life costs, crime and the failures of the school system among the reasons why people left Baltimore specifically. Wasn’t trying to exclude white Americans with those statements I also never said “all white people” but I do acknowledge that I could have said “many” or “tons” or some other choice of adjective for clarification My moms side (white) is from upstate New York were the collapse of Kodak led to tons of people departing the inner city where they lived to work Kodak jobs Outsourcing and industrial collapse (including shipping as we see in The Wire) were common reasons across the country for people moving to the suburbs but I was trying to highlight Baltimore specific reasons with the ones I listed I think black American’s of Michelle Obama’s generation have a natural bias because of things like bussing and race riots, they grew up not being included in pools and schools and seeing the severely negative responses to integration. It makes sense that they would say this was the primary case as many believe it to be I’m honestly not surprised she sees things that way and wouldn’t wanna pretend to understand what any of that must have been like for black children at the time to see and experience I know in my city after integration is when the worst zoning laws formed segregating people here more than ever, economically as well as by race. Yet I still had multiple white teachers and white adults around me growing up insisting that the Civil War was fought for over “state’s rights” Also worth noting that because of the wealthy white people that left the cities because of fear/hatred of integration created business opportunities outside of the cities that lead to more wealthy Americans following, especially those who wanted to be around their community. So white people fearing/hating integration lead to more white people leaving regardless of wether they felt the same

I think you’re right that anyone would have left the city if they had the resources, as you said black families were significantly less likely to have the money to leave At the same time white families not wanting their kids to go to school with black kids was absolutely a contributing factor for White Flight, here where I live in the south especially but also even in cities like New York. Have extended family and older adults I've interacted with in my city who've unashamedly talked about not wanting to share “schools and pools with shines” (shine racist term for black person) Coalitions of parents claiming how sacred "staying with your community" was moved out of cities into the suburbs, specifically towards areas that had white churches and schools. Even sharing swimming pools was a huge taboo, Mr Rogers putting his feet in a kiddie pool with a black man was considered a betrayal to his race at the time. There’s a reason White Flight coincides with the Civil Rights Movement TONS of people who lobbied against integration were adamant about maintaining the separation regardless of laws that were passed. Even President Biden said he didn’t want his kids to go to school “in a racial jungle”

Lmao I lost it when they said, "You worked it for so long and you can't remember his last name" In reference to Herc seeing Avon. I can't believe they honestly said that without a shred of self-awareness since they could be staring at someone they've known for seasons and be like "I've never met this man in my life"

OH INDEED!!!

I'm not your "mate", mate.

Lil Don075

Mate, your level of obsession with this poster is off the chain. Touch grass.

B Guppy

Just keep your politics and opinions away from children, Che Guevara.

Lil Don075

None of this is rocket science, these trends are basic things you learn about in Highschool (or if you’re actively affected by them) My job and basic research into local politics has lead me to reading and learning more about my city and the country as a whole, I didn’t go to college and didn’t need to to understand things like “white flight” or gentrification Nothing I shared is some wild controversial crazy new age stuff, would love if you can find any evidence contrary to what I shared Also I’m a peer support specialist and activity coordinator for young adult therapy groups, not children. The kids/teens I have worked with who suffer from severe mental health struggles do learn from a young age that the country is against them (especially the children who are minorities) so even if I could/wanted to share my politics with them they wouldn’t need me to

space colon

Mr.Space1999 just said that he regurgitates these so called "insights" from other people 😂 He's not a scientist, he's an idealogue. And he works as a mental health advisor for children which is a scary thought. Hopefully he keeps his politics separated from his work.

Lil Don075

🤣🤣🤣 I love it! I see James is here for the bullshit! 🤣🤣🤣

Charlotte Drolet

@Lil Don075 What are you an expert in? You frustrate me because I want to believe you offer some valid counterpoint but it has been hard to find anything other than your insults and general bitterness. I like reading Space1999 comments because they offer some insight. I believe there is a science to everything. IMO you just come off as another programmed idiot that complains and looks at everything from some weird angle but never gives it any real thought. Just spitting the same illogical simple-minded garbage out the side of your neck. Garbage that you were told about but never analyzed. LilDon075 you too are a victim of your society.

Charlotte Drolet

@ Lol Don075 Love you too baby boy, come back and stalk every single one of my comments next week too okay? 😘

space colon

Yeah, you're definitely no expert lmao maybe an expert in leftist anti western bias. Not MLK, more Louis Farrakhan.

Lil Don075

You gotta pay another 10 for that

james johnston

Wheres the regular reaction for this episode ? I haven't watched the show in years I can't follow without visuals.

@Omar O Appreciate you, I’m mostly just reiterating things I’ve learned working in mental-health and with kids or have tried to learn about while supporting local campaigning in my county. My city has been deeply impacted by gentrification and formerly historic black neighborhoods here have been overtaken by wealthy (white) people I’m in no way an expert, just educated on certain specifics of these topics

space colon

Stupidity is an infectious disease it seems...

Lil Don075

Your knowledge in minority population displacement and segregation is very interesting! That other user just wanted to disagree so badly, you keep going with the fun-not-so-fun facts, they really add up with this particular show

Omar O

Tell me when I said segregation was good Literally said “white flight” was bullshit and hurt the cities and communities

space colon

"Actually, segregation is a good thing" so called "anti-racists".

Lil Don075

One of the main reasons these cities become racial enclaves is because white people flee to the suburbs cause they’re scared to live around minorities or think they’ll “corrupt their kids and community” It’s a documented thing “White Flight”

space colon

Wow, what a tragedy! Bring back racial enclaves!

Lil Don075

Used to be the largest and now it’s the 5th largest, in the last 25 years alone 60,000 black residents have left Also worth noting that all the large cities that are or were majority black have increased in population substantially so Baltimore being the biggest 50 years ago (with the general population being smaller) means something different

space colon

My wife won’t have sex with me unless i shower first and usually im ok with that but sometimes i feel spontaneous and dont wanna shower

james johnston

Can't wait to discuss this with y'all after I see the edited episode!

TeaDrinker3000

"Used to be one of the largest black cities" Baltimore is like the third biggest majority Black city in America. lol.

mbds

Ikr, what a moment. Their discussions never disappoint!

HenryM

Same! I remember waiting for them to see Prez hit Valchek after what he did to that kid in season 1, the discussion didn’t disappoint

space1999

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Carver showing concern about the kids. Lola was shocked lol

HenryM

God bless America despite its many faults.

Lil Don075

Crime -leads to- Baltimore residents leaving -leads to- vacant lots -leads to- more crime Crime -leads to- city gentrifying poor areas -leads to- people priced out of homes -leads to- affordable housing projects in shitty areas with no decent nearby jobs -leads to- more crime The long shots of Bubs witnessing Hamsterdam are just so damn raw. Baltimore has tons of vacant lots because in the last 70 years more than 350,000 residents have left. Used to be one of the largest black cities The main reasons so many people left Baltimore were because of how crime ridden it was, how awful the school system was and how expensive quality of life was relative to other areas (and of course white people fleeing to the suburbs cause they were “so terrified” of living in black neighborhoods). Of course it’s also famous for it’s history of corrupt politicians (especially mayors) with an almost comical number of failures by the city counsel to protect residents and reign in law enforcement Also more Iraq War references, the dealers calling their product "WMDs" (weapons of mass destruction)

space1999

Hope you guys had a fun trip!
