after ranking of kings you should consider watching bocchi the rock, its a very chill and enjoyable anime, only 12 episodes and the cast is only made up of female characters

Yeah i hear you, it was like the only example i could think of π like I said i really do love and prefer the episode 13 ending, but I acknowledge it is not βTHE ending.β I just think it the movies are worth watching so they can decide for themselves and see everything all the way through

You can't compare the ending of violet and the ending of aot. If you stop before the specials it's a big cliffhanger you can't call it an ending at all while the 13 episode is an ending. It's just open. We'll see what they'll decide after the last episode

While i do prefer episode 13 as the ending to the show, i agree with ppl that it is not the official ending to Violet Evergarden. Essentially yes, this would be like stopping AOT before the specials because you prefer that ending. As someone who is not the biggest fan of that last movie I believe you should still watch it to form your own opinion π€·π½ββοΈ

Yeah, I'm with you guys on Gilbert's brother. I did still enjoy the interactions between him and Violet though, and agree those were great scenes. I've definitely enjoyed Violet's character growth a lot. I still have some of the same criticisms that kept me from watching the show through the first time I attempted it, but I'm glad I watched the whole series this time.

Why donβt let them decide for themselves? And itβs different. Korra continues decades after TLA and centered on new protagonists. Violet movies focus on her with no significant time skip. I get that many viewers donβt like the conclusion, but Milena and Lola deserve to shape that option by themselves.

Black Sails makes sense. I'd prefer Mad Men or Sopranos, but Black Sails is much shorter so they might as well get it out the way now before they get locked into a show that's going to take them almost a year to finish.

after i watch all the reactions i'll see what i'll do regarding the movies. but ngl, i'm a bit afraid because one can easily guess the controversial thing you all talk about.

My tip for the second movie (little spoiler): Stop exactly after 122 minutes and never watch it through. π

Since there was no poll, I would guess Black Sails. They had already expressed condolences in the pre-discussion for The Wire episode 1 that Black Sails didn't manage to win the poll again. That's probably why they chose it now (fingers crossed for Cosmotron). In the end, it may be something else entirely. Would be funny too. :D

The anime has been on my list for a long time... I have to finally start watching it. It's ranked 10th on MyAnimeList.

You're making it sound like the end of anime is completely open, which is not the case. The anime concludes the story, the movies continue the story a bit further. Just as The Legend of Korra is a canon extension of the narrative of Avatar, Avatar itself also has an ending, a finale, a conclusion for the characters.

I just finished watching your reaction and I would like to emphasize again: The two films are part of the plot, it is not that they only complement it, but that they complete it. The two films end the story in a masterful way. They could have animated 4 more chapters, but they decided to complete the story with the movies.

Not really. The story clearly ends with the anime and the movies continue the story. It's more like Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super or Avatar and The Legend of Korra. For many, the story ends after the 13th episode, for others only after the movies. You can theoretically stop after the anime or after the first movie and have an ending. In addition, the anime and the second movie have completely different motives for the story, which is why the second movie is viewed so critically.
And the first movie really does feel like two chapters, also simply because the first half is pretty much based on a chapter from the third book and the second half is an extension of Kyoto Animation, but the second movie is clearly one long story, one chapter, and is not based on the books at all and tells a completely new story. You can't just split it in the middle.

The thing is, Dietfried's view of Violet was strongly influenced by their first encounter. The book better explained why he couldn't see her as a person, but only as a weapon. However, the anime has cut this section from the story, partly to keep the origin of Violet's story more mysterious. However, this makes him seem very cruel to her at the beginning, which he was, but their first encounter meant that he could no longer see her as human. The fact that in these two final episodes he is confronted with the fact that she is possibly human after all, as Gilbert saw it from the beginning and treated her accordingly, forces him to reconsider his behavior towards her.
And important info: Violet Evergarden is not a manga, but is based on a light novel (4 books). The anime adapts the first two books, but very loosely with many changes, additions and exclusions. The first movie takes a chapter from the third book and tells it in much more detail with a lot of additions. The second movie is not based on the books at all and tells a completely new story.
Here is a link where you could theoretically read the books online: https://dennou-translations.tumblr.com/post/159331691639/violet-evergarden-novel-index

you must see them. They are inseparable from the series.

hello Milena, hello Lola, Im David. The two movies represent about 4 more chapters. That is, the series DOES NOT END with the 13 chapters. The movies are inseparable from the series. It's like the last episodes of AOT that had a movie length.
