For me itâs less a whole season but just more episodes in certain parts. I think it could have benefited with a lil more room in some areas of the story. But also thatâs just me being greedy and wanting more of this story đ

That Sansa quote that Lola mentioned really might be the worst piece of writing in a season that was filled to the brim with terrible writing.
"Without Littlefinger and Ramsay and the rest, I would've stayed a little bird all my life."
That line of dialogue was written shortly after the #MeToo movement as well lmao

I'm so with Lola and Milena and loving/liking all the characters. I've read a lot of opinions about the show and watched a lot of reactions, and usually people tend to fall more on one 'side'. Like, if they're really behind Flint they don't tend to like certain characters. But for me, even though I'm also a big Flint defender, being on his side doesn't keep me from also loving the other characters. And ones like Eleanor and Max, who tend to get the most hate, are up among my favorites (Flint and Max are my personal top two). I really enjoy feeling so much for different people on various sides of a conflict, and it's one of the reasons I love this show so much.

Honestly, you are both great at predicting the plot. Several occasions you've absolutely nailed what's going to happen several episodes or seasons before it does. The Wire was mental. You were throwing out the entire story arc for one of the seasons and were spot on throughout

Silver is definitely the MVP of the episode and many other characters like Flint and Anne have great scenes and dialogues, but it has already been said a lot about those, so I want to focus on Eleanor.
I truly like her a lot, even if I don't always agree with her choices, hell sometimes I was totally against her. But nevertheless I respect her a lot. I can't think of any other woman in the show could do everything she does.
Anne is a lethal fighter, she's brave, loyal, an hardened woman who still have a soft side; but she's not particulary smart (not saying she's stupid either though) and she doesn't have an affinity with strategy or political/negotiating skills.
Mrs. Barlow is very intelligent and cultured, an excellent mediator and wise, she knows how civilized society works and how to move well inside it, but she is not a woman of action (physical).
Max is very cunning, good with her words and to manipulate people, skills that makes her very good at politicking, but same as Mrs. Barlow she is not a woman of actions, like any politicians she's more a "master of puppets" kind, who delegates that type of work to others.
While Eleanor can do every mentioned above. She's intelligent, knows her way around both pirates and civilization, she's good at strategizing, capable of both being ruthless when the situation requires it but also a very good mediator. At the same time she's very brave and even if sometimes she sent subordinates to do the dirty work, when it's necessary she puts herself in the front line, gets her hands dirty, she is no coward.
I loved so much her escape with Abigail, to develop which, Eleanor used all her abilities, both mental and physical. She knew Vane, one of the most feared pirates, would have never forgave her and she knew his crew hated her and would have harmed her badly if caught, she was clearly afraid to carry out her plan but she did it anyway. Even when she wasn't able to open the lock and then the door was stuck, terrorized by the situation and the realization someone was coming, she found the strenght to persevere and don't give up, hurting herself badly in the process. I don't think Miranda, Max nor Anne would have been able to do what she did.
That said, I really feel bad for Vane. We can see it in his eyes, his heart was broken once again and this time for good, this was the ultimate betrayal because he knew she knews that with her actions she was basically condemning him to death by his crew. "I saved your life, I killed him for you [...]", those words hurt bad, he really did everything he could for her. In that moment I wanted to give him a hug :3

I really liked the scene between Billy and Dufresne. As Billy started talking about what he's been through, I thought of Vane. Billy experienced for a few weeks what Vane experienced for I don't know how many years, and I think Billy's words helps us understand better why Vane is the way he is and why he is so averse to the idea of a legitimacy of Nassau, because to him it is just another word for submission.

John Silver, John Silver, John Silver what else can I say, he is my absolute favorite character and THIS is one of the reasons. I saw his betrayal coming a mile away but I was still Floored about how flawlessly he pulled it off, legit NO ONE questioned it at all. Silver managing to outsmart Flint this easy is why I love him but to Silver, he doesn't even consider it a betrayal, from the start he told Flint what he wanted out of this partnership and if Flint derailed at any point, he would be out. He kept his word, lol. Vane's declaration to Eleanor was frightening, but it's also something that was coming a mile away. I just couldn't see their relationship ending any other way, and to Eleanor, Vane could never truly understand what she wants out of Nassau, she DOES want it to be legitimate, she just wants to be the one recognized for making it so and running it legitimately, but to Vane, making Nassau legitimate and having the pirates work under the crown, renders Piracy obsolete and they wouldn't be Pirates or free men anymore so OF COURSE he wouldn't want legitimacy. Loved the character arc of Anne as well, I don't love that she killed two innocent people but I loved that the show allowed her a story where she tries to find out who she is without Jack. Even though Jack and Anne are a dynamic duo, them going in separate ways for a while I believe is what's best for both of them.

Love that scene between Eleanor and Flint on the balcony. The show parallels them a lot, and there are a number of ways that they are similar. Hell, now that we know about Flintâs relationship with Thomas even their sexuality seems to be something they have in common. But this one in particular is about how they are both willing to do awful things - even to those they care about - in the name of their goal. But itâs not something they are unfeeling about or do easily, and they often regret or question it afterward.
Silver and Max coming together to make a plan again. Feels fitting, considering how all of this started with them doing just that back in s1.
Silver talking about how he thought for a moment that somehow Flint had managed to âreach across an ocean and make 5 million in gold disappearâ really makes me think about his words to Billy a few episodes back. Claiming he âdoesnât believe inâ Flint. But that instinctual reaction to think Flint would be able to control something like thatâŠsure sounds like he believes in Flint on some level to me.
âThey told Flint the gold was goneâŠwhat did they tell you?â Great line, and showcasing again Maxâs perceptiveness.
I love how much this reveal ramps things up. Really gets your heart pounding. The gold is more available now than ever. Ripe for the taking, and right when Flint is completely distracted and believes it to be gone.
âDo you know of a crew who might be willing to aid in this endeavor?â I love Maxâs slow smile in response to Silverâs question.
And we end on a bit of a ominous note, with Richard Guthrie stopped by something out in the fog. We donât see who is there waiting for them, but waiting in the fog they are, and itâs quite spooky.
Thatâs the episode! We are getting so close to the end of the season, which is both very exciting and kind of sad. Exciting because there is so much greatness ahead, but sad because that means Lola and Milena are almost halfway through the show. :(
Still, very much looking forward to the next one!

Another great Max and Anne scene. âThere is always a life, there is always a future, as long as one is willing to build it for themselves.â Weâve seen that she understands how Anne is feeling, but her words here confirm it overtly: she empathizes with Anne and gets a lot of what she is going through. More than that, she wants to give Anne something that will help her build that future for herself: Max wants to expand, to gain more footing and influence, and her suggestion that Anne could be a partner in that clearly reaches something in her. Itâs like a light shines in Anneâs eyes for the first time all episode.
Eleanor brings Abigail to her tavern. I feel so sad for her when she hugs Miranda, itâs the first remotely familiar face sheâs seen in a long time.
Eleanor and her dad seem to have a moment as well. Itâs the first thing that has felt even a little genuine between them. Itâs also the first bit of physical affection we have ever seen between them, entirely without dialogue. Possibly itâs some of the only physical affection she has *ever* gotten from him. Itâs hard to believe it, given how awful heâs been, but as I said it is the first time it has felt even a little genuine. And I definitely believe it from Eleanor: the hesitant way she leans into him breaks my heart a little.
âBilly, I donât mean to be blunt, but what the fuck are you doing?â Always makes me chuckle.
Once more the show makes it clear that we are never getting a definitive answer about whether or not Flint intentionally let Billy go or not. Even posits that perhaps Flint himself is unsure about what happened. And Billyâs support of Flint is an incredibly wary one because of it: heâs supporting Flint because of the situation and the rest of the men, not because of Flint himself.

Eleanor and Abigail in the tunnels. Abigail admiring Eleanor is very cute. She mentioned earlier that she admired Miranda as a child, and I think it makes sense she would see Eleanor and admire her as well. And she points out rather correctly that being in this place has made Eleanor the person that she is. Sheâs been shown to be very perceptive even in the small moments we have had with her, and its good characterization.
Billy leads Dufresne into a trap. It is another scene that emphasizes Billy has been forever changed by his experiences. The Billy of before probably would not have continued to support Flint. But this Billy, who has felt Englandâs punishment firsthand, who has begun to get some idea of what it is like to be a âmonsterâ to themâŠyeah, it makes sense that he has been changed by that. And he outlines here what agreeing to those pardons would mean, not just for Flint but the rest of the crew.
âThere will be no more dissent against Captain Flint.â What a wild thing for Billy of all people to say! And his follow up with ânone of us are safe until we are all safeâ is excellent.
Eleanorâs struggle with the gate in the tunnel is incredibly tense. Itâs also another demonstration of her ingenuity. She uses what she has around her to pry the gate open when it becomes clear that Vaneâs crew are looking for them, and though it cuts her hand open it helps get them started. I like that Abigail helps her too, she doesnât just stand there or fly into a panic. Then the light at the end of the tunnel signifying that Vane is coming just as Eleanor manages to close the gate from the other sideâŠwoof. My heart was pounding the whole time.
This scene between Vane and Eleanor with the gate between them is so good. I have seen people get frustrated with Eleanor for disagreeing with Vane when he claims to have killed Ned Low for her. We the audience know that he did, but remember when Eleanor came to him afterward? Vaneâs first words to her were that he âdidnât do it for youâ. The audience may know thatâs a lie, but did Eleanor? Itâs unclear. Whether she is repeating that now to justify this to herself, or if she never believed he did it for herâŠwho can say? I think either are equally possible. Hell, it could be a bit of both.
âYou will turn on absolutely anyone, wonât you?â Ouch. Itâs certainly been true up until this point. Though I do understand how Eleanor felt like she didnât have much of a choice.
Regardless, this is a choice that she is making. And locking that gate seals it. That hanging shot of Vane behind it emphasizes that fact.

Billy and Dufresene. Knowing what Billy was planning this whole time, it puts him bringing this up to Dufrense at all in the previous episode to be quite interesting, doesnât it? Seems like he was being incredibly deliberate. More on that later though.
Oh god, this scene with Anne. Clara Paget truly deserves a shoutout here, sheâs doing so much with her face and the tiniest of movements. I think it demonstrates how much her permanent scowl in s1 was a deliberate choice, this projected front that Anne puts up to protect herself. But anyway, that part where she is looking at herself in the mirror really hurts and itâs such a small thing.
I also love how gently Max takes her hand when Anne is downstairs, as well as the soft way she pats her head when she has to leave. She is being incredibly tender with Anne and it makes my heart feel warm.
However, things take a turn for the unsettling. The guy in question doesnât realize it, but itâs still an immensely uncomfortable experience to watch Anne in this dissociated state almost have sex with a man who thinks sheâs a prostitute that works there. Itâs as if sheâs wondering if this is who she has to be now. She doesnât know who she is otherwise, and maybe this is all that is left for her. Gotta shout out the music during this scene as well, it really adds to the unsettling feeling.
I love that itâs Idelle who saves her. You could make the argument that sheâs acting out of fear that Anne will stab someone again (a reasonable fear lol) but I donât think thatâs it. At least the way she behaves doesnât give me that impression. She was standing at the door when Max was talking to Anne. I wonder if she heard some of that conversation about Anneâs past? And even if she didnât, I do think she was moved by Maxâs words about her. Because this very much feels like Idelle recognizing that Anne should not do this and saving her. I think itâs the way she mouths at Anne to go: the look on her face there seems sympathetic more than anything. Anyway,Idelle is one of my favorite side characters, and I love any moment she shows up.
Ugh, the hug Max and Anne share afterward is gorgeous. The gentle way Max hold sher face, the tears clinging to Anneâs eyes, the hesitant way she holds Max back and takes comfort in her. And of course, the music is beautiful too.

The conversation between Silver and Flint in the wake of the missing gold is very interesting. (Especially Silver accusing Flint of having something to do with it haha, but more on that later). Itâs not surprising that Silverâs support of Flint would vanish along with the gold, but Flintâs rebuttal to that is still a direct hit.
Silver has become someone who *matters* among the crew. He has authority and influence and people like him. He knows that he has those things. Why would he want to give any of that up by siding against Flint?
âWhere else would you wake up in the morning and matter?â Very cutting words from Flint. This is just my reading on it, but it almost comes off like Silver does what he does to spite these words. Like he feels the truth of what Flint says and tries to deny it/lie to himself about that truth. He gives the speech to inspire the men to join alongside Flint, while still having his own plan going at the same time.
Silverâs speech to the men is, of course, really great. Fulfilling that role he described to Billy a few episodes back, about how a crew needed âone man to tell them what to do and another to tell them why they want to do it.â He presents it perfectly here. None of them woke up one day and decided âI want to be a pirate!â Their various circumstances led them down that road for one reason or another, but it had nothing to do with them wanting to chase after it.
(I know thereâs another pirate show about the guy who did indeed wake up one day and decide to be a pirate, but I havenât watched it and Iâm not super interested in it either).

Episode seven of season two. Another fantastic one, with a lot to discuss.
I like the opening with Eleanor and Abigail. It makes sense that she wouldnât just be willing to believe Eleanor right away, especially once Flintâs name is mentioned. For so much of this show the fear his name inspires has been a beneficial and necessary thing, but in this instance it is the opposite. I also like the memories of Miranda that Abigail shares: it brings to mind when Flint looked in on Mirandaâs house and saw children playing inside. Peter Ashe was her and Thomasâs friend, it makes sense that Abigail would have come over frequently with her parents.
Donât have a whole lot to say about Flint and Silver or the revelation that the gold is gone.
I do have a lot to say about the scene where we learn Anneâs backstory. There have been things that hinted at it, but we learn the truth here, and it explains a lot about her character.
âI was married to a man once. Rotten fuck.â I love how these words make Max stop in her tracks to listen, then slowly walk back toward Anne. God, what she describes is so awful. But it's a powerful scene, and despite what she did last episode Anne feels so incredibly vulnerable here. And we know she met Jack when she was thirteen, which means she was literally still a child when all of this was happening to her.
But it also puts a different perspective onâŠwell, a lot of things. The protective front she puts up of course, but also the way she interacted with Max in the first season. There was a point where she tried to encourage Max to defend herself in some wayâŠand itâs impossible to know that now and not think of Anneâs circumstances.
It also calls back to what she said back toward the beginning of the season. âWhen someone gives you a life, it aint really your own.â Jack saved her, and she was always grateful for it, but afterward she also completely defined herself by the fact that she owed him her life.
âIf Iâm not what I was when I was born, and I aint what Iâve become insteadâŠwhat the fuck am I?â
I also love the scene that follows between Max and Idelle. Idelle is of course ready to have Anne killed, and understandably so. But Max meant it whens he said she would protect Anne.
âWhen no one in the world - no one, no one - could care less about what those men were doing to me on the beach, she did. That means something to me.â I love the way Jessica Parker Kennedy delivers these lines. You really feel each word, and itâs enough for even Idelle to feelâŠashamed, perhaps? Or at least she is able to recognize the truth of that statement.
At the same time, I also like how Max calms herself down and makes it clear that she understands why Idelle and the other girls feel the way they do, and that she wants them to be able to come to her and talk about those feelings. She means it too: she doesnât want to dismiss those feelings, both because it could cause problems later and because she genuinely understands.

That moment when Max brings Anne a dress and says âThis will not fit youâ is a really small thing that I love. Because it feels like itâs communicating so much more than its literal meaning. Itâs not just that the dress itself doesnât fit her, but what it represents doesnât either. It works really well with what is going on in Anneâs head, since sheâs struggling to find herself while âadriftâ as Max put it. And the uncomfortable sequence that follows after she dresses, as Anne drifts through the motions while wearing an ill-fitting costume truly captures the disassociation.
In addition, I love Max rescuing Anneâs hat when she is burning her bloodied clothes. Max recognizes that the dress âdoes not fitâ Anne, but also knows that her hat does. Itâs a good detail. I mention it in other comments but Max is so so tender to Anne in this episode and it is so lovely even as Anne herself is breaking my heart.
