I think what's more important than the translation, is the fact that Shimizu noticed Tanaka eating banana. Why did the writer even add that? And why only comment on Tanaka and not Kageyama who was also eating a banana at that time? Personally, I think it's rude to compare a person to a monkey.. and I don't think Shimizu has a rude bone in her body. I think what the writer is telling the viewers is that Shimizu is noticing Tanaka. So I agree with your initial interpretation.

It must be a weird Japanese stereotype I wasn't aware of before watching Frieren and Haikyuu. See, mum? I told you anime was educational ;)
