Palm's character so far is one that revolves around not being able to love herself. Her nen ability (before being experimented on) was used by causing self harm, which was giving her blood to a crystal ball to spy on people. Every time she wants to appear attractive, she changes her appearance because she lacks self love and acceptance. Her normal form, the first time we see her, typically scares off people who misjudge her by her appearance. Which was why she got so attached to Gon who didn't do so.
