Gon made a nen contract, similar to Kurapika, that allowed him to attain that power. Obviously, at a much greater price. Gon's character throughout the whole show is selfish, and this scene is a perfect example of who he is as a person. I also feel that his "trump card" is a representation of how he had to grow up so quickly when placed in a literal war.
