i;ll keep this spoiler free and attempt to explain the time period and mindsets of the time, in case no one has explained too much about the time period - marriage is everything. women had literally nothing. mama bridgerton quite literally has to take a backseat to anthony in these matters because the household, all the money, all the decisions, became his the moment his father died. so he is the head of everything, a lot of pressure upon his shoulders for sure. if a woman were to go unmarried, she'd have nothing. thankfully the bridgerton's are quite wealthy so it's a different circumstance and if they were to go unwed they'd still be financially cared for by the estate/family but it's still society's expectation that you marry. unmarried girls cannot be left alone with a man without supervision. they always must have a chaperone present - hence anthony and mama being around when daphne was entertaining suitors. this is why daphne is so worried about being "compromised." if anyone knows she was alone with a man in the garden, she'd be a "ruined woman" and her desireability would plumment as well as her chances at marriage. remember in little women when amy said that as a woman she'd have nothing, if she had children they'd be her husband's children and not her own? this is that same societal mindset. everything defaults to the men. without a husband, a woman is sadly nothing at this time. this is why it is such a terrifying thing for marina to be pregnant right now. any marriage prospects are out the window if someone were to know she was pregnant out of wedlock. and back to anthony and the family dynamic, it is up to anthony to be in charge of everything. I love the family dynamic in this show. too often period pieces are portrayed in such a stuffy way. i love how the bridgerton family breaks that mold. the kids are allowed to eat at the table with the adults. they're allowed to bicker and be sarcastic and have little spats and be messy and like children instead of these prim and proper mini adults. even though they still follow societal expecations, violet bridgeton (mama) has done a good job and letting them also just be and i really love that about this family. also some background on the featheringtons. the bridgertons are what is known as "old money" and the featheringtons are "new money." the sterotypes that come with that are that old money is "classy" and new money is "flashy." poor pen is definitely a fish out of water in her own family. her mother won't even let her read, lest it "confuses her thoughts." poor girl!! anyway, looking so forward to the next episodes!! hope this helps give some background to the time period.

As someone who has loved Jane Austen for a long time, I forget how confusing this time period can be for people who aren't used to it! This was really fun! Can't wait for episode 2! (FYI, Julie Andrews, whom I'm sure you know, is the voice of Lady Whistledown)
