hope you guys dont hate us after this one.. LOL

Pride & Prejudice (2005) - Movie Night Reaction #53 *2-WEEK* EARLY ACCESS

Comments

Read the book…..seriously.

Lorem Ipsum

A nice middle ground movie between this one and Bridgerton is "The Young Victoria" with Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend (who is Mr. Wickham in this movie).

Murphy

Pride and Prejudice VS Zombies is way better😂✌🏻

Cintia C.

This is a tricky one. I enjoy this movie but it is absolutely a very rushed version of the original book/story and so it feels incomplete and awkward sometimes. The cinematography and score are phenomenal so that always draws me in, but a much better explanation of the characters and love story comes from the 1995 miniseries. And the hard part transitioning from Bridgerton to a traditional period romance is that you completely lose the sex element/physical intimacy because it just was not acceptable in society at the time so it’s not a part of the novel. Something that would be period but closer to the drama vibe and style of Bridgerton (though still not as salacious because it’s from a different network) is Downton Abbey or Sanditon. You actually might enjoy the movie Becoming Jane which is meant to be a biography of Jane Austen. It stars Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy. Thanks for giving this one a try though! Still love the channel!

Austenfanficgal

Completely agree. The best part about being collaborative with them is being able to pick movies they’d actually enjoy watching for the first time, not to just for them to watch our favorite movies. It should be a recommendation for them, not a request for you. But thats just my opinion on it

Veronica

No hate to the ppl that voted P&P to win (personally my fav book and romance movie), but they set y'all up for disappointment. From your reactions on previous material, it's v obvious this would not be y'all's cup of tea. Slow burn, enemies to lovers, and old English language is not for everyone. Atleast it gives you the perspective of how other book lovers view romance in??

Mimi Q

There is a different ending to this movie where you see them post marriage

Alisha

Exactly. I suggested that if you want people (like 3 college age guys) exposed to Jane Austen, then maybe go with an adaptation like Pride, Prejudice and Zombies or Clueless (for Emma). It gives you a very basic Jane Austen storyline but with a twist.

Amy Moquin

I was also really surprised that it won. Even though I’m someone who adores P&P, it certainly wasn’t my first pick for them because I also recognize it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. I remember it took me a while to get into the book because of the use of old English, but once I did, I was hooked. And while so many rave about the 1995 BBC miniseries, this 2005 film version is my favorite adaptation. It’s one of my go-to comfort movies.

Cindy S.

Don’t let the comments deter you. I was preparing myself for the worst, but I didn’t think it was bad in the slightest. I can totally understand why they didn’t enjoy it.

Cindy S.

Came here to say just that! Despite the fact that they didn’t care for it, I still really enjoyed their reaction and their honesty.

Cindy S.

I love Jane Austen, but she's not for everyone and I honestly can't see the guys being interested in any straight adaptation. I would suggest an "inspired" by. For example, I would suggest watching Clueless to expose them to Emma.

Amy Moquin

This is definitely the type of movie that if you would never read the book, you're not gonna like the movie. I love Jane Austen but she's definitely not for everyone. I was surprised people voted for this for you guys.

Amy Moquin

LOL it's fine, the movie is overhyped in my opinion, but I hope it wasn't too painful for you guys xD Your reaction was definitely entertaining.

Amulyas

Oh nooo I just upped my pledge to watch this 😭 I don’t think I can bear it now after the comments lol. I guess how to lose a guy in 10 days would’ve been better!!! I stopped watching Bridgeton after a few episodes so I guess tastes just differ :))

Giorgia M

Watching your guys increasing disappointment with this movie and then your ending ranking just took me TF OUT! 😭

Alisa Day

So sorry you didn’t like this one! It’s okay though, I totally get it. I enjoy P&P but not the ending. Plus, you have a whole round of awesome movies coming up on the schedule to welcome in the next year of reactions! I have never seen Scott Pilgrim and I can’t wait to watch it through your reactions 🙂

sunfairy.world

This is one of my favorite movies but it's ok that you didn't like it. I still love you guys. The US release had a kiss at the end and here it is. Just for you. https://youtu.be/Zg7YhN-I2M0

Marie Leathem

It's totally fine that you guys did not like the movie! For me, it was so much fun watching you guys react to this! It definitely made my night!

Caroline

I second this 😬

Heather Geer

Reading these comments has me dead looool. P&P is one my fav movies of all time but I totally get not everyone loving it, especially since it took me a few watches to catch all the little things. And then reading the book made me love it even more. That being said I know y’all not comparing “you have bewitched me in body and soul” to “hey hey hey” Matthew McConaughey 😂 jk I like htlagitd too haha

منئ ♡

Agreed, the fact they remembered so many characters and kept up with the story speaks volume. I think they are great reacting channel. And even though they didn't enjoy the movie as much as other suggested movies, they still found some positive to talk about, and constructive criticism as well. Much respect for that.

Miss_CJ

What? Who can compare this movie with Bridgeton s2?! 😫 it is so sad that you don’t like it :( but it is alright

Kate xo

I think when it comes to Charlotte, she just saw the opportunity and made herself available for Mr. Collins and lucky for her it worked! I don't think she was in love or anything. She just made it obvious she was open to a proposition, she pretty much encouraged him in doing so. A bit of a contrast with Jane who was very shy and her reservation caused Bingley/Darcy to doubt of her infatuation.

Miss_CJ

Kinda knew this was gonna be the consensus when the movie won the poll. As a woman I don’t see the hype of this movie at all lol.

Ari

Ok but...if they were bored by this, there's no way they would have made it through the 6-hour miniseries version! It would have allowed them to slowly grow attached to the characters over multiple episodes, which may have helped, but it's even older and stuffier than this version. ...However, I suppose there is Colin Firth coming out of the lake! 😄

Megan the Librarian

TLDR; Watch it again. It's got jokes. There's SO much about this movie that you missed! For one thing, it was not very "desirable" to have a wife that is well-read. Women were really just taught the things that Caroline Bingley describes in her "accomplished woman", which is why Mary is plunking away at the piano the whole time. Lizzie (like Jane Austen) had little interest in doing anything that made her "marketable", making her an oddity. Like a lady-like tom-boy. Anyway, like I said there is a lot of hidden humor missed! Like in the first ball when Lydia and Kitty come bouncing up to tell their mother about the regiment coming they open with "You're not going to believe what I'm about to tell you!" If you listen closely you can hear their father sarcastically say "You're going to take the veil", meaning becoming nuns. Then Mrs. Bennet calls Jane ugly, even though it's her father hosting the ball. Also, later at the ball where Darcy asks Lizzing to dance and the mom is all bragging and flinging pudding (or whatever) you can see the dad trying to get Mary off of the piano with as little embarrassment as possible which, in itself, causes a scene. But if you listen to what she playing, it's some poorly played rendition of a song about plowing a field for farming, which is so trailer-park! Anyway, little things like that. Also, even though Charlotte says she's marrying Mr. Collins because she's scared, if you look closely you can see her all wide-eyed and mooning at him every time she sees him. I mean, you have to watch for it, but it's there. It's not as sexual as Bridgerton because, at the time when it was written, it was scandalous just to make skin-to-skin contact. BUT if you think about how badly you wanted them to kiss the entire movie, it's kind of cool that Jane Austen (and everyone who made this movie) was able to create that kind of sexual tension without talking about "touching yourself" or grazing boob after a bee sting. Not that I'm knocking it, I'm not...but the tension was there even in the absence of these things.

Audrey Marx

I remember when I first watched Pride and Prejudice and I wasn't into it either (never read the book either) for the majority of the movie since the dialogue was too fast for me, there were too many characters to keep up with, and a lot of the "drama" was so sudden/came out of nowhere like when Charlotte told Elizabeth that she's engaged to Mr. Collins I was like whaaaaat in the heck is going on?? BUT when I saw Mr. Darcy walk towards Elizabeth at the end, that scene immediately hooked me and changed my mind. That scene gave me butterflies!!! I read somewhere that you can see his clothing style change gradually like all of his clothing in the beginning is really stiff and tight and the outfit at the end is all flowy and loose which symbolizes how his personality has changed as well which I thought was brilliantly done! After falling in love with the ending scene, I watched it again and again and absolutely loveeeee everything about it now. I appreciate the warm and vibrant lighting throughout, the lively atmosphere with the animals and moments when the family are all together, THE MUSIC, THE SCENERY, the way they shot some of the scenes in "one shot" like during the second ball and you can see all of the characters in their moments without cuts/edits, and so much more!!! I actually loved that they didn't kiss on the lips and showed other ways to be affectionate or closer emotionally. After he "fixed" all the things he did/that went wrong (which he didn't even want her to find out about AND which took a long time to do), he literally said if you don't feel the same way, you will never see me again like wow, what a gentlemen and huge respect! He "righted the wrongs" in hopes of winning her back but ultimately he loves her and respects if she doesn't feel the same way and is willing to walk away no questions asked. And now I want more and am reading the book hehe Anyways, so I totally understand that you guys weren't feeling it since I was in that same spot too and you usually don't want to watch a movie more than once that you originally dislike but KUDOS to you all for keeping up with the dialogue, names/characters, and what was going on in the story from first watch because that was really challenging for me to do! (actually I was pretty much lost the whole time on my first watch lol) If any of you guys are interested though, I highly recommend watching the "Pride and Prejudice But Everything Is Explained By John Mulaney" video since that is a hilarious "spark notes" version of the movie that explains some of the things you were confused about I think!

Julie

I think they would LOVE bridget jones!! :)

J

Bridget Jones's Diary is a modern (loose) retelling of this story that I think you guys would actually really love.

Elle

Wait... WHAT??? The UK version doesn't have the same ending?? No wonder! I was so confused! 🤦‍♀️ I guess they knew the Americans wouldn't be satisfied if they didn't get at least 1 kiss, huh? Whereas the Brits were more likely to be Austen purists? 😄

Megan the Librarian

I LOVE Pride and Prejudice…but honestly? If this version had been my introduction to the story, I probably wouldn’t. I’ve read the book and seen the 95 version a billion times, and there is so much more there in both. It’s ok you didn’t like it, you can’t like everything! :)

Megan Brick

Promising Young Woman is SO GOOD

Megan Brick

On a casting note: Zuff was right that the girl who plays Lydia was also in Hunger Games (she was Joanna Mason. A.K.A. Naked Tree Girl). And Kitty, the annoying one who was giggling all the time, is Carey Mulligan who has been in a ton of stuff! You should watch her in Promising Young Woman sometime. She plays a COMPLETELY different character (plus it has Bo Burnham who is like my favorite person right now!) And the short Collins guy is Tom Hollander, who was also in the 2nd and 3rd Pirates movies.

Megan the Librarian

I think y'all legitimately didn't watch the end of the movie, cuz it definitely doesn't end with the dad giving his consent! There's a whole scene where Darcy and Lizzie are sitting outside on their wedding night and they definitely kiss! (Which is sort of controversial actually, because that would never happen in a Jane Austen book). You gotta understand that when this was written, all that stuff was implied, not spelled out like in modern-day Regency romances (like Bridgerton). For example, it would totally have been understood that Wickham and Lydia were sleeping together and that's why they had to get married. But it's totally fine that you guys didn't like it. As Bryce just said, you told us not to be scared of recommending things we don't necessarily think you'll like, so it's ok for you guys to not like things we recommend sometimes. Don't let this scare you away from other Jane Austen stuff, though. I think you'd definitely like Sense & Sensibility more.

Megan the Librarian

This film has an addition to this ending in the US vs UK version. The extended ending has some of the things you mentioned that this one lacked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zg7YhN-I2M0

Sue

also lookup pride and prejudice hand scene on tiktok hahaha

Molly C

wait did you guys not finish the movie? they kiss in the end and it was cut off hahaha

Molly C

There is an ending with a kiss but its included only at the end of the American version and this was the UK version lol

Bri

You would’ve enjoyed bride and prejudice way more 😂 that’s my fave!

Shanice British

That’s my shit

Shanice British

Couldn't have said it better myself. It's a subtle and nuanced romance movie and book. I think it's a huge mistake to keep comparing it to Bridgerton, espcially when the book was written in 1813 lmao. Of course people don't like certain movies and I respect it, but I truly think a lot of the viewers that don't like P&P don't understand the double meanings and nuances in the dialogue/actions. It's not a usual romance movie that you take at face value; it requires analysis. Also, the use of language and old English (and how fast the dialogue is) can be too complicated for some people to comprehend - especially on first watch.

💗

I’m devastated. Bridgerton is catered to modern audiences so it’s a lot more exciting, but P&P is more of a slow burn and set at the pace of that time period. Lots of women love this movie because of the subtlety and nuance. You also just gotta know a little bit about the Regency era to understand why people are behaving the way they are and why certain things are a big deal (i.e. the hand flex because she wasn’t wearing gloves and feeling his crush’s bare hand made him freak out). Elizabeth told Darcy that dancing encourages affection. So the next time he saw her, he asked her to dance. The next time he saw her, she told him to practice having conversations with people. The next day he bursts into the drawing room of the Collins house and tries to talk to her but fails. He’s literally trying to do everything he can to make her like him but has problems socially. Idk I’m sad y’all hated it but I’ll move in in time 🥲

Victoria Faye

Was about to go to bed when I saw this posted but guess I'm staying up for another few hours! Although, the tagline on this one has me a little worried. Haha.

Megan the Librarian

The best part of this movie was “the mouse in the mirror”😂😂😂

Savannah

It's funny because that hand clench between Lizzie and Darcy in the movie never actually happened in the book. At that point in the story, Darcy, who found himself thinking he was 'at risk' (of developing feelings) with Lizzie had decided to somewhat avoid her the last couple days she was at the house tending to her sister. When the sisters left, he was polite but also didn't want to bring 'Lizzie's hopes up of getting with him'. In his head, at that moment, he believed that he opened himself enough during his interactions with her (getting caught in the moment, enjoying their banter and conversations) that she could have misunderstood his feelings towards her, not wanting her to believe he had made her some advances if that makes sense. On one hand, Lizzie was very happy to leave while Darcy was trying to convince himself that what he felt was just platonic and put on a facade. So the hand clench is just misplaced in my opinion.

Miss_CJ

eh, polls are polls right?

Cocalita

Bride and Prejudice (2004) is a better adaptation. Change my mind. 😆

Elizabeth Srsic

i feel so validated by these comments lol seeing it do so well in the comments and everything was making me question myself lmao seeing all these responses now it's so validating lol

emily ღ

I saw the choice winning and just sighed quietly because I didn't want the girls to jump me but I really do not understand the hype about the pride and prejudice either

Sammxney

Loved the pride and prejudice tv series in the 90s as it was more faithful to the book, but the movie…not my favourite either guys! justice for about time 🥲💗

Marie

it’s okay to be wrong

Kat Humphries

I’m surprised y’all didn’t like it more but I will say I like the 1996 version much better as a film adaptation & the book is just so damn good

Chael

This is my favorite romance story because the characters are flawed. The movie doesn't really do it justice. In the book, you follow Elizabeth's point of view and it's just brilliant. She has the vanity at first to think that she is very perceptive and doesn't let her feelings get in the way of a truthful judgement. And later, realizes that she had been blinded by prejudice when it came to judging Darcy's character. While Darcy, had a lot of discomfort in society, which made him act rude or seem very haughty. They both had pride, and prejudices in different areas. In the book, there are many instances where the characters have a back and forth. Somewhat playfully. Like a battle of the minds and opinions, which Darcy really admired. And it's said that, even if he thought she was a 'tolerable' beauty at first glance; her personality, her eyes, her elegant posture, made him change his mind. And afterwards, thought that she was one of the most beautiful women he knew. So, while his feelings grew for her, Lizzie on the other hand started disliking him very much because of all the bad things she'd heard about him but remaining polite nonetheless. (His rude attitude, what he'd done to Wickham, what he thought of Lizzie's family in society, what he did to separate Jane and Bingley, etc. All fault to misunderstanding but still valid feelings by Lizzie who believed in those lies. Because, from her POV, wouldn't Darcy seem like a despicable person?) The thing I find so fascinating in the book is that the author was able to make one fall in love while the other hated him and all that without the characters understand what the other felt. The first proposal was an absolute mess, and both were right in their feelings at that moment. Darcy's romantic were understandable because he thought the bantering and all that was somewhat flirtatious, he thought her smart and beautiful and grew honest feelings, was willing to 'downgrade' in the society's eye to be with her. While Lizzie's offended feelings were also super valid. His confession was passionate but extremely clumsy. First, Lizzie although very surprised, politely declined his proposal and that hurt HIS pride, asking why she was saying no with no regard for how big his proposal was. And that was the last straw causing her to burst out and tell him everything she'd heard, and that he would be the last man she would ever marry. Oof. I don't know, it might not seem all romantic but the growth of the character is the best. And the romance between them is much clearer after they've met again few months later at Pemberley. Both saw each other with new eyes and the book does a really good job to show genuine interest on both sides. Lizzie felt guilty for all the horrible things she'd accused him from, softening her attitude towards him, and able to see how good of a man he was, falling in love with the true Darcy, not the despicable image she'd built of him because of all the rumors. While Darcy is able to get out of his comfort zone to be more agreeable to others who matter to Lizzie (like her uncle and aunt who travelled with her). It's like a start over between them, and they honestly are perfect for each other by the end. This story is a classic and it's one of the first love-hate romance. I always get nervous when I see people react to this movie because I know it's not for everyone. There are a lot of subtleties and it's a slowish movie so yeah..I'm not mad at you guys for disliking it. I just think the more you watch it, the more you can appreciate it, and the values/lessons in it. The book is still better tho.

Miss_CJ

right!! it'd be a very good treat!

emily ღ

This is why they need to watch How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days! I just know they’re going to like it

gabrielle

also your complaints are so valid!! that's how it felt for me "okay, but WHY do they love each other." for me, p&p is a lot of "supposed to's" - darcy and elizabeth love each other because they're "supposed to" you're meant to see this as an epic lovestory because you're "supposed to" but it just falls very flat to me. as it's been said above, the movie feels more disjointed than the original story and other versions/adaptations of this story. it kind of takes the liberty of the audience knowing them and knowing "darcy and elizabeth are meant to be" so you root for them from the start, without really setting up WHY you should be rooting for them at all. this cannot be compared to bridgerton season 2 at all, in my opinion. there was such clear tension and such dynamic attraction there. this is more subtle and nuanced, and you have to have some context in order to grasp certain moments. like the hand clench. at this time it was improper to touch a ladies hand without gloves. that's why it's so intimate when simon removes daphne's gloves at the dinner table, and when she has him adjust her button while on their promanade. it'd be like touching a very intimate, naked part of her. so when darcy and elizabeth touched bare hands, sans gloves, it was akin to something only appropriate on one's wedding night. the hand clench is the immense and intense attraction. that hand clench = kate and anthony's "because you vex me" fireplace scene. if that makes sense lol

emily ღ

we tried 😂 it's okay, can't love everything!

Kristi K

This is why I voted About time, I KNEW this wouldn’t be the movie for them😭

Danielle

Y’all are so valid for not liking this movie! I agree lol

Jai

I see the caption. This is one of my favorite films. I’m scared to watch this. 😭😭😭

Madison T

They watched the UK version unfortunately, not the US ending

💗

When I saw that this won I kinda expected this to be the final verdict lmao. I’ve never even tried to watch this one tbh because I know it’s not my type of movie. Some things aren’t for everyone and that’s fine. If anyone has a problem with your reaction that’s on them lol 🤷‍♀️

LeAnna

It's honestly so refreshing seeing you guys not like a movie! not every film is gonna be a hit and that's okay, I gotta say growing up I never got the hype for this one. I much rather prefer Emma to the other Jane Austen stories.

Syd

Wait, but they did kiss at the end though there was a scene at the end where they're at darcy's place, and that's how it ended. Regardless, it was the same for me. I had to watch it a couple of times for me to fall in love with this film. Love the honest opinion though! :)

Izabella

My favorite movie, but totally get that it's not for everyone. I think that a second viewing is better, as you pick up on the intentions of the characters more

Diane Burd

Yeah, I think you're right. Sense and Sensibility is much more palatable for people not deep into historical dramas and Jane Austen. Honestly, I really enjoy the 2008 miniseries as well. I definitely felt like this would be a miss for them. This version of P&P leaves out A LOT from the book too, which makes it feel disconnected. Someone familiar with the book/1995 version can easily fill in the blanks, but if you're not then it makes it a bit hard to follow. Sense and Sensibility definitely is written to be easy to connect with for everyone.

Terri

I thought this too. When this one won I kind of cringed because I didn't think it would be a good fit. Bridgerton is very different in tone and it bends much more toward modern times in the way they act/talk then P&P. Also, personally, this isn't even my favorite version of P&P. It leaves out a lot, which makes it hard to follow and it feels disconnected unless you really know Jane Austen's work. Overall, I rarely see a reactor like this unless they are a big period drama fan.

Terri

I didn’t like this one either guys 😭😭

Alana

Never watched it but I'm not surprised by the reaction.

Rose c

Told y’all to do pretty woman and y’all didn’t listen 😂😂😂 I’ve never watched this movie because I’ve heard mixed reviews on it

Shanice British

I personally prefer Sense and Sensibility (1995) with Emma Thompson. I feel it more engaging to watch even for non-period drama watchers.

Angela Zavala

…. I tried to tell y’all they weren’t gonna like it 😂

Katlyn

caption already broke my heart 💔 lol but i appreciate honest opinions!

💗

Should have watched how to lose a guy in 10 days 😂

Patricia Cox

Love the honestly! 👍 Never really liked the film either.

Erica M

don't worry, some things aren't for everyone and that's alright💯

Tia Lily

i hated this movie the first time i watched it, but for whatever reason, loved it on the second watch...it's a weird one lol

L A

No! That means they missed the “Mrs. Darcy” scene 😭

منئ ♡

do not feel bad for not liking this one. p&p is not for everyone. i was worried when this one won that it wouldn't be as enjoyable for y'all. it seems like people either love this movie a lot or just don't vibe with it and both are valid opinions. hopefully next week you'll have more fun with whatever wins. but this is definitely a movie i think everyone who is into movies and romance stories has to experience once regardless lol

emily ღ

Nooooo I’m scared after the description. Either way I still love y’all.. most ardently 😂

منئ ♡

Oh no lmao I’m scared 😅😂

Kiara

not the caption LMAOO I have never seen this movie because period pieces aren't usually my thing, but gonna watch along with you guys... i'm scared lmao

Michelle

favorite movie omfg. As far as kissing you guys did watch the uk theatrical version which has no kiss. The US version does show a very quick glimpse into the future with Darcy and Lizzie married and included a kiss.

J

that would have made for such a fun reaction!! i hope they do it one day. they'd have fun with it

emily ღ

Wondering if y'all liked it. I know you guys would love About Time. 😁

Erica M

I watched this for the first time yesterday to prepare for their reaction, and let’s just say, I understand the caption!😭😭

Mariya Pratt

right like what the hell does that mean 😀

Kris

love this movie but htlagitd would make for an amazing reaction😭hope u get to it one day! caption is making me lol

k

i am so deeply afraid to watch this after reading that description
