I always wondered why the mom chose not to interfere between Marianne and Alan when he got abusive towards her and acted like Marianne was at fault but I think watching these episodes over again made me realize that Denise (M’s mom) doesn’t want to be a victim of abuse again. And that is totally inexcusable behaviour but I think I understand that better now.

Just for some context as to why Connell couldn't just move in: there was a major Irish recession post-2008 which led to a pretty debilitated property market. The fact that Marianne's family owned multiple estates, including one in Dublin, would've meant that they were incredibly influential people. Hence you can see why Connell would have felt incredibly anxious in asking to stay over, as it would be the equivalent of asking for a lump sum of money. That's how it's phrased in the book at least, "It just felt too much like asking her for money."

Connell's anxiety is so debilitating that he can't bring himself to ask Marianne to stay with her even though it's clear, from when they were in school, that she would do anything for him. He has blinders on and can't see past his own internal issues. I feel so bad for him because his anxiety is expressed so subtly that no one, including himself, really takes it seriously. I know someone whose anxiety manifests in panic attacks, so it's easy to see when they need help. Connell's anxiety causes him to shut down and people can easily mistake that for shyness.

They both just have so many general issues and mental health issues. It’s crazy when you read the book because you hear all of Connell thoughts and his motivations and struggles make more sense. He doesn’t want to impose on Marianne, it’s a lot to do with class and money. She loves him and she doesn’t see it as him asking too much of her, or that he would owe her anything. She doesn’t struggle for money or having somewhere to stay so it’s different for him. The nude thing shows to me the almost self harming behaviour Marianne will engage in like showing love by doing things for the other person that is not good for her, she uses sex in this way a lot of times to almost debase herself. It’s really sad and usually because of self esteem issues.

Like I know their miscommuntion is annoying but it makes so much sense with Connell, no matter how much he loves her that doesn’t take away his anxiety. He literally is incapable of speaking even though he wants to

This conflict is so frustrating because if they talked everything would be solved but at the same time it just really makes sense! With Connell’s anxiety and their history with monetary disparity it’s quite understandable why he’d feel uncomfortable with asking that of her. Still, I feel very sad for them.

I always found the scene where she is crying taking a nude selfie to be really dark. through all the crap she's going through in her home life she is still trying to do something to make Connell happy.

connells anxiety is literally debilitating. As someone who also has had bouts of really bad anxiety, watching him choke on his words and hold back tears when he's trying to express himself is so painful. Paul is such an amazing actor. With the few lines that he does have he's able to convey so much, all of that inner turmoil.

emily

oo i'm excited for this
