I agree fellas. And I read Austen every year. The 1995 show with Colin Firth is the definitive adaptation. I cannot recommend highly enough reading her works. Austen isn’t “chick lit” any more than George R R Martin is only for guys. Years ago (before there was an HBO series) I picked up a book I saw on display at the library for a guy in my life thinking he might like it. Meant only to read the first page of Song of fire & ice…didn’t put it down until I threw it across the room (remember when THE THING THAT COULD NOT HAPPEN did in fact happen?) A couple of days later I was ready to come back to it and didn’t stop until I finished the series-all that’s been published at least. All that to say, good writing is good writing. And we miss so much by thinking an author or genre isn’t for us without even looking at the work. And Bryce, fiction can tell you more about life and how to live it and conversely how NOT to live it than most self help nonfiction ever could. Try adding some of the Great Works into your life and see what comes of it.

actually also i think like when lizzie tells mr darcy about lydia running away with mr wickham, it's supposed to be like she thinks he's leaving her because he cant marry someone with a stained reputation now

LOL i became a member because I saw you guys booing the pride and prejudice book in the princess diaries LOL and had to see your reaction for this movie. Tbh ive seen this movie like 20 times cause i like the subtle romance vibes. the thing about mr darcy paying for lydia's marriage is cause if lydia ran away with a guy without getting married, it would ruin the entire family's reputation including all of the sisters. People would think that ya know,,,, they're all like "easy" cause of the messed up double standards of the time period. so mr darcy making sure lydia at least got married kinda saved them. still tho im glad you guys watched this movie LOL. it was a fun reaction

This movie has two different endings! In one of the versions, there's a much more romantic ending with a kiss. I prefer that one even though it's different from the novel ending. As for it not being like Brigerton... that show is more modern than historical whereas this movie is (from my understanding) more true to the period in which it takes place. That being said, I understand why it wasn't a favorite!

The ‘05 version is indeed superior. The mother is even more insufferable in the book. I’m visiting the raining-angsty-rejection scene filming location next year because I’m tragic. 🙃 And Rob is an excellent judge of character it seems…sensed Mr Wickham was a prick from the on-set. I love this film, glad to see men willingly watching it 😅 Even if it wasn’t your cuppa tea, being open to such different things is always good.

I have only seen the trailer but that film, like Bridgerton, has taken many liberties with the time period in order to make it more accessible to the masses. Even if they didn't like P&P, I don't think it's a bad thing that they watched it. It's not necessary for them to like everything they view. I actually thought it was refreshing to hear them admit that they didn't care for it. They gave it a go and we got what we wanted: their honest reactions.

Right, one of the reasons Bridgerton became so popular (for better or for worse) is that it subverts a lot of expectations of the traditional period drama by infusing multiple modern elements. I enjoy both, but period dramas are just not going to do what Bridgerton does because that's not the way the original source material was written. Very few adaptations of these older texts will stray far from that (and when they do they often get raked over the coals). For that reason a lot of people love and enjoy Bridgerton but would not like most period dramas.

I didn't get why everyone requested this movie so much. Honestly, persuasion with Dakota Johnson is so much better and likely one you guys would like.

that's what kinda of bugged me, like i get that there may be some mild comparison but telling them it's so similar when it's really not? bridgerton - for better or worse - is snappier. p&p is more to the time and can be jarring if you aren't used to that pacing or way of speaking, or portrayal of romance.

you were lied to though; beyond the enemies-to-lovers trope and balls, it has little in common with bridgerton season 2

nobody kissed in the austen novel, but this adaptation was BLASTED for the light kiss at the end and the first proposal in the rain when it first came out. faithful austen readers were UPSET that the adaptation was hornier than the original, so it’s funny to hear you guys talk about how erotically dull it was.

It's wild seeing Matthew as Mr Darcy in this because he's on Succession and he's too good at playing a corporate tool lmao
