Promising Young Woman (2020) - Movie Night Reaction #54 *2-WEEK* EARLY ACCESS

I remember hearing the director Emerald Fennell or Carey Mulligan saying that the scene when she suffocates is as long as it takes to suffocate irl.

Could you make this available in my country? I cant watch it. The Netherlands

LiekeVerberne

Anatomy of a scandal (only six episodes) on Netflix is a great show about the subject of consent. I think it's very realistic in the way it portrays shame, doubt and denial

Elvira

Same

Rosie

Also the actor who plays the father is Clancy Brown, who is in a ton of stuff, but most notably the voice of Mr. Krabs of Spongebob lol

Second time seeing this movie and it still hits as hard! The title is a jab at the Brock Turner case, in which he was often referred to as a "promising young man" with a bright future who made a mistake (which was actually just a horrific crime.) and unfortunately many other perpetrators are referred to in the same way.

Yeah. Like I said...I can see why people like it. I'll give my real opinion on it, but I mean no disrespect to people that liked it. This is how I personally felt. I just enjoy a good discussion on movies/TV. To me, it feels like it's the same feeling people get when they can't look away from a car accident. It's more gawking at an unfortunate situation than anything. It's mainly because this is such a serious topic and to me, it doesn't feel like they did it justice. It feels done purely for entertainment and like I said...gawking. One reason I feel that way is it all seems so fake and too perfect. Cassie goes on this revenge fantasy and I guess never really gets hurt? Before the end I mean. She never has the cops called on her? She wasn't taking video of the exchanges I don't think. Unless I missed that. The film treats everything like a big reveal, but you can see most of it coming a mile away. There is something about it that doesn't feel grounded, or realistic. It feels like someone's revenge fantasy rather than reality. The thing is...I think it's supposed to feel realistic. Yet, we are just given hints at everything, so for me, it never really hit emotionally. We don't SEE the tragedy because they never show us. The most uncomfortable part and creepy part is honesty the very beginning when the guy takes her back to her apartment. THAT felt grounded and scary. It feels like they made this movie for people that are easily triggered, but want to say they really experienced something horrific. Again, much like gawking at a car accident, but never seeing the tragedy at the hospital. It feels like it was meant to be provocative rather than realistic and sad. I just think using this subject in this way is a bit obscene . I personally don't buy a entire group of doctors raping Nina in the first place. I went to med school myself. Most people there are a bunch of type A control freaks that have always followed the rules to a T. So an entire class basically decided to do this? Not a chance. I could see a group of dumb high school kids maybe. Then again, it's clear they didn't want to be "realistic" with any of it down to how the two doctors respond to Cassie's death.

That Paris Hilton song is an actual bop. The director chose it because like many things women love, it's written off as trivial. She said if a man knew all of the words to this song, she'd fall in love with him. And she really had audiences fooled. I truly thought Ryan was a good guy, but damn, the rug got swiftly pulled out from beneath me. It made sense to me then why the moment he tells her to shut up and refers to her as "stupid bitch" didn't sit well with me, no matter how gentle or playful his tone was. (The first instance of calling her a "miserable asshole" I could take as a joke and his way of breaking the ice, but once was enough). And his last conversation with her, calling her a "fucking failure" like it was sitting in the back of his mind the whole time. What a jerk.

Yes, there is ambiguity because the word rape is never mentioned in this film, but it wasn't difficult to deduce what happened to Nina. And we eventually did learn through Cassie that Nina was raped repeatedly in front of a large group of people. It was super hard just listening to the video that Cassie was watching. Why on earth would we actually need to see it??? That would've been way too much. As far as what Cassie was doing to the guys, it seemed pretty obvious given what she did with Madison and Dean Walker. She was trying to teach them all a lesson, that their actions (the men) or inaction (the women) have serious consequences.

When Bo Burnham showed up on the screen and Rob was like, "My sweet man," I felt that in my soul! 😄 So wish his character had turned out differently, but I understand why they made him that way and why Bo was so attracted to this project. Did you guy even notice that the main actress was also the annoying little sister in Pride and Prejudice??

Megan the Librarian

That was a rollercoaster! wow

Mariya Pratt

my two scents: the ending was horrifyingly dark. i was in panic attack crying when i saw it. up until this point of the movie, real danger had not been shown. everything was kinda candy wrapped. i think we needed to see the real version of what would happen in such a scenario. as brutal is it was. she knew she could die, and i think she did not mind, maybe. but she put herself in danger all the time, this time she did not get out. however.. as "fun" as the revenge is, i hate it. it's not realistic it's too "oh how clever! so funny hahha" and it did not fit the tone if you ask me. but i know every detail of this ending had a POINT to it, weather we liked it or not.

Hey guys, it says that the video is not available in my country so I can't watch it

I'm not as blown away as everyone else with this. It's okay, but everything is so ambiguous down to what actually happened in the video/Nina and what she is doing to the guys throughout the movie. I mean...if you're going to go there then actually go there you know? Plus, her dying felt predictable to me. In no way did I see a happy ending for her after all she'd done and I knew what would happen as soon as she went to that party. It's okay and I can see why people like it.
