Normal People Episode 11 EXTRA Early Access/Watchalong

Comments

its been taking me a while to get through this series as im watching it for the first time with you guys.. but this episode made me realize the reaction of emotions can really disrupt a life path. sometimes when you get worked up, wether thats; being angry, anxious, or hurt, you have to find small ways to calm you down or else things will not play out they way you want them to. a lot of their issues at first were confusion of emotions, then miscommunication, and now we are at reacting poorly/abruptly. i really want to read the book now since this show has so been amazing. (also these are the realest depictions of therapy and sex ive ever seen in a tv show/movie.)

They actually toned down the physical abuse from Alan towards Marianne in the show. It almost seems like he hasn’t hit her before this incident but in the book, it’s really just the first time Connell is fully aware of it. If I rewatch, I end up in a bit of a depression slump after so I really have to wait till I’m in a good place lol.

I completely understand being frustrated by the mom, however I have to say I get why she sat there. Being in an abusive household, there is the reaction of just stillness in the face of active abuse. If you think about it, because of her husband and maybe even in her childhood, she was beaten into submission. Often times those who have been abused either become the abuser or become complacent. It's almost survival mechanism.

That moment after Connell said the situation would be weird and she interpreted it as him thinking she is weird is so sad. Specially knowing that she held a lot back from him before because she was afraid of him perceiving her as damaged.

It's crazy to think how different we all react to trauma, especially children. Marianne and her brother grew up with an abusive father who watched their dad abuse their mother and each other most likely. Alan's response is to basically mimic his father's behavior and he seems extremely protective over his mother but chooses to treat his sister the way he watched his dad treat his mom growing up. While Marianne's grew up to have extremely low self-esteem with a brother constantly putting her down and belittling her making her feel like she deserved the treatment and her brain was basically wired to feel that is "love" and why she began seeking that treatment from her partners, except Connell. It goes to show how much Connell and Marianne have helped each other grow and realize their insecurities so they can evolve as people and crazy to think how different they'd be if they never met. OK i just had to share this it's kinda long buttt yeah ahaha

You should watch Love/Hate. It’s another Irish series. Very different as it’s about drug dealers in Dublin, but youz were talking about how this series makes you feel like you’re in the room with the characters, and that series makes you feel that kind of tension. You can find it on RTE player.
