Going in to teaching middle/high schoolers I do get nervous about being roasted and being Jacob not knowing what to say back lmao

i think it's important that they tackled this topic bc kids 'acting out' bc they're not being stimulated or challenged is definitely a thing. although it was mainly due to ava's negligence and procrastination, i would say both melissa and janine were at fault/in the wrong here. if melissa was the amazing and more experienced teacher that she was claimed to be, i feel like she should have figured out that courtney just wasn't being challenged. whereas janine, although she was the one who figured it out, she really had no right to call melissa a bad teacher just bc she felt petty or that melissa was better than her. after 5 episodes you'd think that janine would have learned not to get in over her head by now but alas here we are. anyways this was a great episode, the plot line with jacob and his class was so funny

I find it realistic that Melissa messed up this time. She should have put the signs together that Courtney was simply being mentally unstimulated but seasoned teachers do miss that in children regularly in real life. My mom had to have come to Jesus chats with every new class my younger brother went into bc his behavior when he was unchallenged was so chaotic that teachers really did just peg him as a bad kid instead of a bored kid. So I found that vulnerability in Melissa relatable & it shows that even if you’ve been doing something a long time you have to remain sharp & discerning or you’ll miss important things you’ve learned before.

I know it was written this way to create a plot line for the episode, but if Melissa was truly the experienced teacher that we have come to believe she is, she would’ve caught the need for Courtney’s advanced placement much sooner. When it comes to children, all behavior— whether it’s good or “bad”—must be considered a form of communication since many of them don’t yet have the skills to communicate their needs. The first thing Janine should’ve done is asked Ava and Melissa for any files on Courtney containing intake forms or observations. It bums me out when I hear about children who are considered problematic and don’t get the help that they actually need and instead they are suspended and/or held back, neither of which solve anything and instead place shame on the child.

I really liked how Janine was able to figure out that Courtney was simply not being challenged enough in her learning. Oftentimes students who act out are either like Courtney or have some kind of a learning disability, and struggle to stay engaged in class and the first answer is usually to transfer classes or to keep getting them in trouble. This show is able to convey a lot in 20 or so minute episodes and I’ve been really enjoying your takes on it :)
