And whether we always admit it or not, teachers have unconscious biases too, and sometimes the non-gifted kids achieve less because the teachers expect less from them and unconsciously hold them to lower standards.

The school I was in and the school I worked at didn't have gifted programs per se, and I'm kinda glad. The way we handled it at the elementary school I worked at was by having "stations" where the kids would rotate in small groups through different activities, and one of those activities would be working with the teacher (or me, the assistant). The kids didn't know that if you were in the orange group it meant you were at a lower reading level then the kids in the blue group, but it gave the teacher a chance to work with the kids at different levels and give them what they specifically needed.

we had an advanced class for maths when i was in primary school called eleven plus but i never actually tried out for it bc i was never good at maths lol, i'm not upset about it tho bc i'm pretty sure even the people that actually took it and got in hated it. i do agree with gregory tho bc gifted programs just end up making some kids feel like they're not good enough, even the name itself like it just sounds like they're saying the other students aren't gifted which can be really damaging for their self esteem and it can affect their performance in school.
