Alan Arkin that plays grandpa is the dad in Edward Scissorhands. He’s been in a lot of great films. This role was one of his funniest IMO.

I think it's because when Olive's dad asks if he has a kid there he doesn't answer. Instead he says "First time?" which to some indicates that he's saying the dad doesn't understand yet. That there are some who just come to be pervs

If anything the host is the creeper, lol. The look on Olive's face when he's singing to her always gets me!

I have realized that my absolute favorite thing is when there's a mix of funny and serious (I think that's why I've become so obsessed with Bo Burnham's comedy too). Like there are so many moments of dark humor ("Where's your grandpa? In the trunk of our car" will never NOT make me laugh), but also deep truths about the human experience.
As someone who has dealt with body image issues most of my life, I really appreciate this movie. And Abigail Breslin is just so good in this one! (She's also really young and does a great job in the movie Signs, which is another one of my absolute favorites).
I'm sure you can see now why I thought it was so ironic when this movie kept losing all the polls, and each time, all I wanted to do was comment, "Life's just one f***ing beauty pageant after another" - Dwayne. 😄

I think you're right. I heard somewhere that he's supposed to be a dad, but until I heard that I always assumed he was some random pedo who just like to watch these pageants! Apparently that's what most people think and the director was just never expected it to read that way!

Finally! I love this movie so much and I love the fact that child beauty pageants are inherently creepy but they were so upset at her routine that she loved doing it out of her own innocent fun. They had a grown man serenading young girls who are like 6 years old lmao

LOL, I don't know why so many reactors think the earplugs guy is some random creeper. I'm pretty sure he's a dad of pageant girl that's been dragged to these pageants so many times he literally can't be bothered to even listen to it anymore, and after Olive's performance, stands and shouts Yeah! because he's seen the first interesting/entertaining/not-so-fake performance ever at one of those things.
