Derry Girls 1x2 EXTRA Early Access/Watchalong

Comments

She was one of Bridget Jones' friends going all the way back to the first movie, for perspective.

Jojo77

just did a little research on shirley henderson who played moaning myrtle, she was 35 when she first started playing that role (!), making her the oldest actor to portray a hogwarts student. that's so wild to me! she isn't in derry girls but that actor does sound a lot like her.

sabrena

i hope you guys can react to Beef soon. it's a new show on netflix

Uk education system in a nutshell: You start high school at 11 and end at 16 where you sit your gcse's (exams in about 10 subjects taken nationwide at the exact same time around this time of year), you wait until the third week of august to find out your results. These results determine whether you made it into college/6th form (sex education/skins/inbetweeners are all set in a 6th form). Like the other comments have said, gcse's are key for job/uni applications.

I love how you guys are doing this ahahah as someone from and still living in ni, im buzzing you are reacting to it cause its so good ! also, for context GCSE's are huge exams u take in the subjects u picked to study for about 2 years after dropping the other subjects you were taught at 16 which is heavily influential in getting jobs, into university etc , so its kinda like ur diploma i've heard ? but idk if its reliable :)

My favourite character is Aunt Sarah, she absolutely breaks me every time she speaks 😭

I'm French and I lived in Dublin for year. While I was there, I traveled around Ireland and Northern Ireland and when I tell you, some of the accents there are so thick, sometimes it was really hard to understand people haha

The accent is very heavy!! ☺️ Ireland has a large number of different accents. I think that’s why people noticed Penelopes Irish accent slip in a few scenes from Bridgerton. :)

Mimi

although i will say the derry accent is the most made fun of accent here - even compared to other NI accents it sounds a bit ridiculous 😅

Nic

They're not playing up the accent at all - trust me there's a lot thicker northern Irish accents than you hear on this show hahah https://youtu.be/pj705DvCSxg

Nic

other slang that comes up in the show is slabber = gossip, boke = vomit, you must think I came up the foyle in a bubble = you must think I was born yesterday, sláinte = Irish for cheers (said when drinking), melt = annoy, peelers = police and wain = wee one (a kid)

Nic

Watching this made me realise how weird the northern Irish slang "hole" is but it does just mean bum it's the same as saying ass 😅

Nic

What I love is the characters are always doing little things in the background. Orla especially. Like this episode she was actually trying to blow out the flames herself which I thought was hilarious 😅

AmyWonderland92

Loving these reactions so much! Orla and Clare make me laugh the most for sure and it makes me happy you guys are noticing things Orla does in the background!

Michelle

That is genuinely what a northern Irish accent sounds like lol. Also just fyi the show heavily revolves around northern Irish politics during the 90s. (The unrest between Protestants and Catholics)

she's got that lucielle ball type of physical humor that is just *chefs kiss* (when done right and boy does she do it right!)

emily ღ

yes this is so true!!! i love this comment

k

also erin’s facial expressions deserve an award theyre fucking hilarious

k

im so glad that bryce is catching on to orla in the back of every scene because shes literally the funniest to watch😭😭😭 like shes always doing something hilarious in the background

k

my "lightbulb moment" of the night...."derry girls" refers to their mothers and their generation too!

emily ღ

also it's never out-right mentioned but orla is REALLY autistic-coded. the candy (a comfort thing, a possible stim for her, etc) is one of many examples you'll start noticing. she's so funny to watch in the background so try to be on the look out for her, she's always doing something and it always makes me smile to watch her.

emily ღ

i love this episode because it shows a very recurring theme.....their mothers are just as "bad" (i use that loosely) as they are and i love it. they're always on their case for things but episodes and moments like this shows a very core thing...we're all just muddling through as best we can. i don't feel much different from myself at say 16, except with more responsibilities and back pain lmao this show does a really good job at showing that at heart, their mothers are still the same girls they were also at their daughters age, who will, when backed into a corner, come up with some wild and crazy shit to get out of it lol

emily ღ

also i HATED doing gcse's i'm so glad it's been a few years since i finished high school bc i don't think i could handle doing them again lol (to answer your question, they're HUGE exams that we take at the end of high school that are highly valued by colleges, universities, and employers. i think they're the equivalent of american high school diplomas but i could be mistaken idk what you guys have over there lol)

Tia Lily

i love this episode so much lmao, i stand with james when i say i'm not the biggest fan of fish and chips/chippy's although i can't say that out loud bc i might lose my brit privileges /j
