@emily and @k also this is supposed to be the 90s. This is not a hyper-informed and sexually mature teenager in America in the 2020s. They are from a more innocent and conservative kind of background where you don’t just see porn and sex stuff all over the place. They’re in catholic school for goodness sake.

Sadly, our k-12 school systems here in the U.S. don't teach us much about other countries. At most, I recall there being a brief mention about Bloody Sunday and then it was onto the next thing. I'm mainly familiar with the Troubles because the lead singer of my favorite band (Snow Patrol) is from Northen Ireland. Gary has talked a lot about his experience growing up during that time period, and how his grandmother lived in Derry. He raved about Derry Girls when it first came out, but I'm only now getting around to watching it. I'm absolutely loving it so far, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

to be honest, i grew up in the 90s and the only thing i ever heard of the troubles being over here in the US is that touched by an angel did an episode about an irish catholic boy and an irish protestant girl falling in love. i was like...seven? even my mother (who watched derry girls with me) had no real recollection of what'd happened in ireland at this time. it just wasn't really taught over here or talked about. so i don't think the guys really may know what these girls are growing up in. the termoil and the generational trauma. the only thing i can compare it to really is that i was in 5th grade in 2001. i can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for those girls to grow up living in constant fear and turmoil. i remember we had a really bad storm hit my city years ago and it flooded the entire city. everything underwater. my bus stop for school...under water. the bank across from my university. under water. there was a really powerful article that came out about how seeing these things every day without pause (the images on the news etc.) was daily traumatic events. and that lasted maybe a month. these girls (and their mothers before them) have grown up with DAILY TRAUMATIC EVENTS. their entire lives. of course teenagers are going to be silly and immature. but some of that "immaturity" is overcompensating for the childhoods they don't get to have. they can be silly and goofy in their friend groups and not think about (for the brief moment) the checkpoints and the risks of even leaving their houses just to go to school or the store, etc. erin can be silly and a little ridiculous because she's a teenager and that's a given. but there's an added layer there of them not getting to just be teenagers. so when they can, in the rare moments they can, their immaturity is a gift. let them have that flightiness and silliness and immaturity. because it's a rare thing for them in the face of all else.

This show might be a comedy, but take a deeper look into the girls and James. Their reactions and outbursts and compulsiveness. Soon this show will start to briefly cover some tough topics.

Mimi

Erin is the main protagonist, a delusional young girl who is very positive with an optimistic attitude. She is played so well. Remember guys, this is in the middle of a conflict. “The Troubles” in the early 1990s .🤍. It’s a much harder time for these teens.

Mimi

shes actually so real like her flaws are perfectly normal flaws for young people to have and i love her character sm

k

i have such a soft spot for her lol looking back i see pretty much myself and all my catholic high school friends rolled into one in that character lol

emily ღ

right?? she's a silly teenage girl, she doesn't mean any harm, she's just trying to navigate her life and her heart. a lot of us have been there and have been just as if not more "cringe." lol besides, it's not like teenage boys were any better lmao

emily ღ

Love her but she frustrates me so much sometimes lmao

Michelle

LOL why are y'all so hard on Erin she's just a dumb kid at times

Briana J

I love this episode! I love seeing James win for once lmao well, almost win. Great reaction and so excited for more!

Michelle

I agree with Zuff - Derry girls has an unreal soundtrack

Nic

i was literally rewatching got and its so funny watching it while knowing him as granda joe😭😭😭😭 like it feels like ik the real him

k

the actor who plays granda joe was in game of thrones as barristan selmy! (the lord commander of the kingsguard who gets fired by joffrey and joins daenerys) so weird watching him in a comedic role but he kills it

Mika

"Have you got a Union Jack splashed across your tits Claire" is one of the most iconic lines it always gets me

Nic

oh erin lol

emily ღ

I love Gerry so much💕 always so nice and supportive

gerry and granda joe’s dynamic is one of the best in this entire show. its just hilarious😭😭😭

k

the second hand embarrassment i got from erin in this episode is😭😭 shes so funny but definitely a victim of jumping to her own conclusions very fast

k

this episode has always been absolutely class💀😭 also the little "dance number" is actually a real dance for that song! saturday night is a HUGE party song over here, literally everyone knows the dance lol
