I cannot believe you guys actually watched this!! I’m over the moon

I think being introduced to the story as a teen when the book came out helps with my positive experience. The Too Much factor when you're a teen and life is entirely Too Much, doesn't hit as cringey. It hits as profound and really relatable. I feel like the cigarette thing too is like specifically 2011-2014 tumblr-core. When the book came out it really had that wow that's so cool vibe. Makes sense in the world of posting dramatic pics with deep quotes on them haha. I can see where things seem lame now, but my connection to the story in the time that the story came out makes it not (for me). I'm a firm believer too in like taking a story as it is - which in this case is like a sweep you off your feet teen love story. I feel like as a specifically Young Adult book/movie it nails that just as far as Augustus' character being That Dream Guy to a teenage girl. But I totally get your side, just definitely have my own different experience.

we actually talked about this right after watching hahaha - rob

I read all the comments, and I can't believe no one pointed out that shailene woodley and aaron rodgers used to be engaged, especially after they brought up rodgers LOL

Need y’all to watch Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story from 2021!!!

Loved this reaction! Was crying right there at the end w y'all -- this one always gets me good!! The ultimate cute couple, I feel like the depth of their relationship is always what drew me back to this book (such a good/intense read if you haven't read it, the book has me in full sobs for the last half I swear). So glad you guys shared this w/ us!! Agree with Rob on the quotes. So many of these have stuck with me and can really change/inform the way you look at life!

Meg

I sob every time I watch this movie. 😭

Certainly not the only one. I feel the same, but it chalk it up to simply not being the target demographic for this book/movie. I hadn’t watched it until now and I’m in my 30s and honestly couldn’t stand these kids* lol They definitely had that problem of being glossy book characters. However, I’m sure if I were a middle schooler and saw this for the first time it would hit totally different. *I swear to god if I was at my job and some kid tried to tell me that an unlit cigarette was a metaphor I’d lose my mind.

oh you guys 🥺 BRYCE THAT THUMBNAIL so cute 😄 i can't watch this. my dad died of cancer in February. we didn't know he was sick, then he stopped eating. and a month later he was gone. turn out he had cancer in his entire body. life is altered forever. and to anyone who understands this pain, i will send you a hug.

I rented the movie, started it, got about a minute in and was bored. Sometimes movies aren't worth rewatching.

Nathan Elkin

If you like Laura Dern & Shailene Woodley you should watch Big Little Lies! :)

God damn we really kiling Bryce with these heartbreakers lmao

Damn this was a hard watch. I don't think i've seen this move since it came out, and I was a young teenager at the time and so at the time it was sad just because it's obviously about a sad topic. It hits so different now that I'm an adult and I work at a children's hospital. Having seen and worked with families who are going through something like this, and will one day possibly have to deal with the ultimate heartbreak like in this movie is just gut wrenching.

i'm going to leave a bit longer of a comment now that i've watched the reaction and i'm curious to see if anyone else feels the same as me. for me, i can't connect emotionally with this movie. a walk to remember? the notebook? i cry like a baby no matter how many times i've seen them. but this one? i've always just struggled to connect with it on that level. to me, too many things felt very unrealistic. agustus waters(TM) just felt so much like Book Character(TM) like he was meant to be this next great literary figure along the lines of holden from catcher in the rye or something. and that's not always a bad thing, and it's not a bad thing at all in the book, but when it's transferred over from book to movie it just doesn't hit. the cigarette thing always felt lame, and while we know now why the author of that book acted like that when they first met him, it still didn't feel realistic. the way he just went to far in and crossed so many lines, it just felt...over the top? i've had asshole professors in college essentially say similar things, and while i get he was hurting and lashing out, it still just felt Too Much. a lot of the film to me felt like Too Much and that's what made it hard to connect. a walk to remember is a similar film in theme but there's a rawness to that makes it feel more real. jamie and landon just felt more real to me. and maybe i am looking too deep into it, but in the book, it's fine for the characters to be these "glossy" book characters. but it's hard for me to emotionally connect or see them as being realistic when it's transferred to the screen. if that makes any sense at all. i know this film is life-changing and beloved by so very many and i promise i'm not trying to dog on that or make anyone feel unvalidated in that. this is just what i've felt with this movie and i really am interested to see if i'm the only one?
