The Nazi‘s weren’t after people who simply weren’t blonde haired and blue-eyed. Hell, half the men in the Nazi party were brunette. However, they did research your bloodline to determine whether or not you were of „aryan“‘descent. I‘m half German and my grandfather still has his certificate.

SPOILERS for those who haven't seen Jojo Rabbit yet: This movie is based on the book Caging Skies by Christine Leunens, I have not read it personally yet but I plan to. From what I hear, it is not as comedic as this film. Captain K and Freddy Finkel were a couple in the film. The Nazis didn't just attack the Jewish population but they also went after homosexuals and anyone who wasn't "of the Aryan race" so blond hair and blue-eyed. As (Rosie) Jojo's mom mentions about his grandfather not being blond. There were a lot of people like Captain K and Freddy Finkel who were essentially forced to join because they knew that if they didn't, they were in the population of people who would be murdered themselves. Fun Fact: 2 of the “clones” were Jojo's (Roman Griffin Davis') real life brothers, Gilby and Hardy Griffin Davis XD Taika Waititi who directed the film and also played as Imaginary Hitler in the film said “screw that guy” and purposefully didn't want to do any research on him before playing him in the film. He also said what bigger F-you to Hitler than having a brown Jew play his character. Since Waititi is Maori and his mother is Jewish. Him not doing any research on Hitler made some funny coincidences like the scene where he is eating a unicorn head made out of meat. Since Hitler was actually a vegetarian. And the scenes with the cigarettes. Hitler initially was a heavy smoker but he later banned smoking in the Nazi party because of the health risks. He wanted his army at full force essentially and not weakened. All kinds of studies were being done during that time period so they were learning how much it affected people. Lastly, Captain K rushed over to Jojo's place most likely because he found Rosie in the town square. A lot of people think he went there with Rosie's bike but it was confirmed that it was not. He ran over to check on Jojo and knew that Elsa was Jewish as soon as she said she was creating the book about Jews. Because of all of Jojo's questions about what would happen if someone was hiding one. And he knew that Jojo was creating the book and not Elsa. So he made sure that he grabbed her papers to pretend that she was Inge his sister. Sorry to talk your ears off but this dang film has so many layers! I think this movie did a good job of going into a child-like psyche of what was happening at the time. Jewish people were just like everyone else. They were neighbors, friends, classmates, etc and then they became the enemy. This movie has some great moments and it is also sobering to think about the level of propaganda and brainwashing that happened.

Glad you liked it! I believe shoes are a classic symbol of remembering the victims of the holocaust. The mountains of shoes found in the death camps, and it's a common "statue" to have shoes with a name of a vitctim displayed around a city.
