Seeing how fast Michelle moves gets me every time!

dude i agree, this episode is the epitome of building me up to just absolutely gut punch me wtf 😭😭 another note, i was born in 95, and i only know a little bit about fatboy slim, so the guys are probably just a liiiittle too young lol

Kristi K

just wanted to mention that joe saying "well done, columbo" was a reference to a well-known detective show at the time! so it's about the same effect as "no shit, sherlock" :-)

jay is on olympus

hhhhh not this episode, it gets me every time

The writer said (as others have commented) that her friend’s father died in similar circumstances and “just like that, we stopped being children.” I think that was the idea here…for Erin and her friends, life will always be divided into before and after Clare’s father’s death. And living surrounded by violence, someone dying of routine but surprising causes was probably doubly shocking.

I’m American and definitely know Fatboy Slim! These guys are just too young 🤣

So the dad was also in the first episode of Derry Girls. Not just the last episode. So Lisa said she wanted to write the death into it as this was the moment for her and her friends that everything changed and they had to grow up. And it had to be Claire’s dad as we’ve never met any of the other dad’s with the exception of Gerry. I loved the little moment of Jenny reaching out and patting Claire on the arm as she past during the funeral scene.

I can’t believe yous don’t know who Fatboy Slim is!!! One of those culture shock things like I thought cause he is internationally known that everyone knew him but a lot of artists don’t break into American charts. I went to see him at Creamfields festival a couple of years ago, it was amazing!!!

Fatboy Slim was huge in 90s. If I recall correctly, all of the songs featured in this ep are his, with the last one being a lovely version/cover of his song "Praise You." I hadn't heard any of these songs in ages, but they're still awesome. You guys should take the time to watch the music video for Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice." It features Christopher Walken dancing by himself in a hotel and generally being a badass; it has long been regarded as one of the greatest music videos of all time.

I watched this season as it aired in the UK via VPN/ I was not aware that there was a seventh episode airing the next day. So, for about an hour I thought this series had the worst, tragic, unexpected ending ever until I figured out that there was a final one still to come. Devastating. And as someone old enough to remembers the 90s, Fat Boy Slim is a real artist. He's a DJ and he was best known for the video for his song Weapon of Choice which was just a long dance sequence by Christopher Walken. The song they played at the end Praise You, is also him.

joe was referencing Columbo the tv detective . worth seeing an episode.

also michelle being the one to explain "it's not good" seeing as her mom is a nurse, she's probably heard many tragic stories or at least has some idea from what her mom deals with on a daily basis. michelle can be very brash and off the cuff, but she showed so much maturity in that entire scene and i can't even really put it into words but there was this groundedness her actress seemed to portray. it really highlighted that she is far more than just the brash one of the group and how deeply she feels and cares for her friends.

man as soon as gerry showed up to tell the girls the bad news i started bawlinggggg 😭 literally so heartbreaking and especially at the fact that it happened to clare right after her first kiss. we always see clare in her bubbly yet panicked self and to see her breakdown like that broke me also. clare's dad was actually in a few scenes all throughout the show (even in episode one!) but only very briefly compared to the other adults in the show, but the scene of him going all out for the girls' concert tonight really showed what kind of strong and supportive and sweet father-daughter relationship they had. ugh i can't believe we only have one episode left, i'm really gonna miss these reactions!!

Also side note: as claire comes out and shakes her head indicating that her dad didn't make it I always love how Michelle could not physically move any quicker to get to her. She makes fun of her a lot but I feel like in that moment she was one of the most supportive of the group. A bittersweet side to their dynamic.

Such a sad episode and simultaneously one of the funniest at points. Lisa McGee wrote it because she had a friend whose parent passed away suddenly from an aneurysm around the same age. When I first watched the show as someone from Ireland I assumed he got shot by paramilitaries but finding out it had nothing to do with the political scene was a really bold and brilliant move from Lisa. Shows how everyone had to not only deal with a war but all the trials and tribulations of "normal" life too.

this episode gets me every time. my mom had an aneurysm when i was a kid. thankfully she was okay but it was very, very scary. this episode hits harder knowing nicola lost her own father before filming and that this storyline was very difficult for her, but also kind of healing in a way. i loved that we got that scene between claire and her father, him wanting to make the girls (and james) feel like princesses and do something special for them. this episode right here is what makes derry girls so special. how it can be all fun and silly and then pack a huge punch. i wasn't expecting this at all my first watch-through and i still need a box of tissues beside me to get through this episode. sending everyone that needs it after watching this, a hug <3
