I love SciFi! Hopefully it'll win some polls but you guys should also fee free to just pick some you want to see. I don't think anyone would object.

You guys should watch Nerdwriter1 (he’s on YouTube) video on Arrival. Really amazing short video on the intricacies of this movie and how kind of unique it is. All his other video essays are great too

Finally got around to watching this and WOW 10/10. I definitely didn’t see the twist coming. As for extraterrestrial life being out there I don’t know tbh, I mean maybe? Lol may sound different but I 100% believe in spirits living around us and living parallel lives to ours. As in they have their own families, lives, good and bad people etc. it’s trippy to think about but I’m certain of it

Open the link in safari, for some reason not working on the app

Definitely one of my favorite sci-fi movies! I'll take linguistics over action any day, and I'm a sucker for a good plot twist! Even though the sapir-whorf hypothesis isn't really supported anymore, I think our language is definitely tied to our culture and worldview (although whether our language is affected by our worldview or visa versa is debatable). For example, in English we talk about time as if it is a commodity. You can spend time, take time, or waste time. We even say "time is money". Whereas in another language from another culture that views time differently, that might not be the case. It's so fascinating, and I love that this movie delves into that. I also love the ethical debate it sets up that makes us automatically ask ourselves what we would do in Louise's shoes. Would we make the same choice? I know Bryce said these types of movies may not make great reactions, but I disagree! It was so fun to watch you guys piece everything together and have your minds blown! 😊

i agree with rob on the whole not really liking the way aliens are usually portrayed thing. like when i think of aliens i don't think of the green/blue/grey guys with triangle heads and big black eyes, it's bound to be something incomprehensible. take deep ocean creatures for example, they take on the craziest looking forms in order to adapt to the pressure at the bottom of the ocean. i think the same could be said for aliens, that they probably just look like something you'd never be able to imagine due to a lifetime of adaptation. plus aliens are 100% real idc, i've made this argument before and i'll make it again. you literally cannot tell me that earth is the only place that inhabits any form of life. however it's interesting to hear you say that there are aliens in the ocean, i've never thought about that before but honestly i wouldn't be opposed to that idea, it very well could be true.

What she says to General Shang at the end translates to "In war, there are no winners. Only widows."

First time something that ive voted for has won! Yay! You asked about the bird? You're right about it being used to test the air! Back in the day, canaries were used in mines to alert the miners of toxic carbon monoxide levels. The bird would basically exhibit behaviors of distress and then die before the poison really affected the workers, so it was an alarm to evacuate before anyone was seriously effected. The theory that Jeremy Renner asked her about is the sapir-whorf hypothesis and despite its seemingly logical "foundation" it is a pretty contentious theory that isn't really supported anymore (it was developed in the 1920s). Also I think we "see" the future in the beginning of the movie to throw us -the viewer- off about it being her future, but SHE doesn't really begin to see her future until her second meeting with Abbott and Costello. I LOVE this movie and it came out right before took my linguistic courses so when I actually saw the movie I was like "whaaaaaaatttttt??? I recognize all these terms and theories!" LOL glad you guys liked it! I actually appreciate your sci-fi reactions. A mind being blown in infinitely better to me than a laugh :)

I want extraterrestrials to exist and I hope they're friendly and we can trade technology with them so we can space travel like them.
