Brokeback Mountain (2005) - Reel-Timers MM #11 Early Access/Watchalong!

Comments

brokeback mountain is a movie that rewatch every single year in june (used this reaction to watch it for this year!) and every single time i notice or pick up something different during each rewatch. it's literally the only movie i can rewatch over and over again and still walk away with something new. a couple of things that i noticed over the years that just tear me apart are the following: jack was only 19 when he met ennis, right before they hook up there is a VERY coded conversation between the two of them about pentecostals and jack literally says "it's when fellas like you and me walk straight into hell" you and me referring to men who like men and ennis replies with "you may be a sinner but i haven't had the opportunity" which almost sounds like they both know exactly what each other is thinking, and rob pointed this out at the end but ennis is constantly talking about how scared he is to be found out and jack is almost blissfully ignorant to how the world is and then in the end it's ennis who no one really suspects anything of (except alma obviously) and jack is the one who (if ennis is right) was beaten to death... and like every rewatch i discovered new things this time too! the first one being that in the beginning jack is constantly aware of what ennis is doing almost like he's been watching him in awe and is always trying to impress ennis (it's things like this when you notice that make their relationship that much richer and makes you really appreciate the writing and acting) and then the other thing is ennis in the beginning even when they're merely coworkers will do anything jack asks: jack doesn't want beans - ennis says no more beans! jack wants to go hunting and ennis doesn't - ennis immediately tries to kill an animal for jack...i really cannot wait to find out something new when i rewatch next year!

Katie Holmes

the way y’all pronounce ennis is crazy lmao

I was never a fan. I understand how you feel.

I was just never a fan of this movie. I thought maybe with age my view on it would change. Turns out I still am not a fan.

I do feel like at the time of this film, going a bit off what Natasha mentions, I don’t believe there were as many openly gay or bi actors to do these roles. That being said, S.W. your feelings are totally valid! And I know there others who also feel that way about this film. On a similar note, I heard that Michelle Williams was a huge influence in how much passion Heath put into the love scenes between Jack and Ennis. Basically telling him how important it is to show that passion since they were so deeply in love and in to each other.

Heather Geer

1000%! He was equally fantastic no matter what role he was in. I genuinely feel like with his Joker, he gave us one the the greatest performances of our entire generation.

Heather Geer

dark knight is just one of those films that the word "incredible" doesn't even seem to do it justice lol such a brilliant film. heath was a brilliant actor who really put his heart and soul into his work rather it be something dark and heavy or light and silly. definitely a very beloved person all these years later

Totally fair but I do feel like society turned the film into a punchline rather than the actors themselves and famously Heath Ledger refused to do 'bits' about the film telling Jake 'It's not a joke to me - I don't want to make jokes' which I always thought admirable. I think it's just the context too, for 2005/2006 it felt revolutionary now it feels a bit clunky and dated for sure.

Natasha

Everybody likes this movie but to me it just looks like straight white men making fun of gay men lol. That’s just my personal feelings about it

S.W.

oh amen for a new mic, yeah i realized after i got to that point that u fixed it lmfao :)

celery

should've came back around the 30 min mark... had to cut my mic because it did this glitch it rarely does where it makes a super high pitched noise when i talk... sorry about that! got a new mic so it wont happen again

and yes, Michelle Williams (Alma) and Heath met and fell in love while shooting this film. They were married for a few years and had one daughter, Matilda. Heath died not too long after he and Michelle separated.

I don't know what it is, but I have never cared for Jake Gyllenhaal as an actor. I do think he and Heath had a wonderful chemistry here, but Heath's performance was the more interesting and gripping to me. What a huge loss!

Cindy S.

Ugh this is such a sad movie 😭 can’t wait to see your guys reaction

Karina Ortiz

Tia Lily

god i love this movie

lilly

oh no don't tell me the microphone curse made a comeback

Tia Lily

Regarding your intro, I now would absolutely love a Dark Knight reaction if you haven’t all seen it lol. But yeah, what a performance from both of these master class actors. 👌 Heath and Jake have always been favorites of mine.

Heather Geer

i stopped being able to hear bryce after around 6 minutes in the watchalong :(
