Moonlight (2016) - Movie Night Reaction #69 *2-WEEK* EARLY ACCESS

The actor who plays teenage teenage Kevin (Jharel Jerome) won an Emmy in 2019 for his work in “When they see us” (Netflix show). It’s about the exonerated 5 and he plays one of the 5. It’s based on the real life story of 5 young black boys in the early 90s being accused and then convicted of murdering a white woman. They were in jail for years until the real murdered confessed.

Logan.

Great reaction guys. It's the first time I've seen the movie since it came out in the theaters back then. It's taken me so long because it still depresses me a little. But watching you react to it just reinforced how much of a good movie I thought it was then and definitely now.

The blue used in the film was very soft. Lots of the revelatory moments happened at night - on the beach of course, but at Blue's house when Little asks questions of him. And Chiron's dream is set at night. Black cruises around, acting hard by day but is weak at night. To bring the ideas together - there's a strength in the ideal of the 'black man'; the drug slinger, the muscle, the hip hop gangster. But in the moonlight they look blue, and even the toughest has a softness. A tenderness. Through the day they hide from it, put on camouflage and build walls to survive these unfortunate circumstances. At night these vulnerabilities are exposes. In moonlight, black boys are blue, and we see who they really are.

Quick clarification about Chiron’s mom, she’s not buying meth, she’s buying crack cocaine. The beginning part of the movie is set in Miami in the 1980s during the crack epidemic that hit the black community especially hard.

I'm surprised you guys all didnt see it and didn't know it was an LGBT film. But yes Chiron's story feels extremely real and his circumstance so tragic. But it didn't feel like it was exploiting the stuff he went through it just felt like you observed his life story. It's such a great film, I'm glad you guys got to watch it in time for pride month

ok now that I've finished the reaction, my 2 cents. first, just wanna clear something up: Kevin wasn't in a relationship with anyone at the end. he said that they're just friends now but they do have a kid together. also, my interpretation of the ending is similar to yours but with a little something extra. Chiron is definitely himself when he's with Kevin and I love the way the actor portrays this with his mannerisms. up til that point, he was very confident in the way he moved and talked but as soon as he's around Kevin again, he turns into shy and unsure of himself Chiron. amazing acting! as for the ending, that last shot signifies to me that adult Chiron is finally able to begin healing the child Chiron with the help of the one person he could always be himself around: Kevin. such a spectacular film that's beautifully shot and acted. thanks for the reaction guys! <3
