I have to say, though, this version's Anne is absolutely perfect, but 1980s Gilbert was so much better (pleasedon'thateme) The thing is, and I don't want to do the "but in the book..." thing, so this is the only difference I will mention: In the book (and the 80s miniseries), when Gilbert calls Anne "carrots", that's the first time he ever talks to her, and he's trying to rile her up a bit because she's very smart in class and he feels threatened. They become friends much later. In this version, it doesn't make any sense, because the show established him as defending Anne before and wanting to be her friend, so why would he insult her?? I think they wanted to signal that Gilbert was a good kid from the start, but it made this very famous moment feel very out of place! What I love about this version is that because it's longer, it takes its time and fleshes out a lot of the domestic life and customs of the time and place, and they do a great job! It feels lived in and real.
