Moonlight (2016) - Movie Night Reaction #69 *1-WEEK* EARLY ACCESS

No, the statement isn’t saying it in a negative way, but more so saying it’s a film that happens to involve a queer lead. Lgbtq+ isn’t a film genre and as a queer person it’s frustrating when a movie with a queer character is broken down to simply a queer film. For example, Love Simon is a coming-of-age romcom about a closeted gay teen; it has queer cinema and is a moment of queer mainstream representation. But it isn’t just a queer film. It’s a romance film that encompasses queer love, adding to the historically straight line of romantic cinema. Does that make sense? It’s moreso implying that this film is widening a genre of cinema, by diversifying its catalogue. As in love Simon, we also get a significant subplot featuring a black couple’s romcom story. Because altogether, Moonlight isn’t just about a closeted queer man. It’s also about toxic masculinity, black masculinity, gang culture, poverty, immigration, and addiction in the household/parents with addiction.

The lead character is gay and its about him being in the closet. It's very much an LBGT movie.

Ryan Roach

It is a LGBTQ+ movie because that's what it was marketed as and the message the filmmakers wanted to put across. And many LGBTQ+ films deal with my issues than just sexuality, as any movie does.

I don't really understand what your statement means. Are lgbtq films not deep? About serious circumstances? Are they only about lgbtq people? I mean, you kind of contradict your own assessment. 'The lgbt is so minimal but powerful'. That alone qualifies it as an lgbtq movie. If a message, whether conveyed with many words or very few, is powerful, then the message is about that. It can also be about other things, but if you feel something from a portion of what is said (or shown), then it is still about that. A movie doesn't have to fit in a single category. Nothing does. People, especially those related to the lgbtq community, should understand that. You can't put us in a single box.

Well it is an LGBT+ movie bc the characters are a part of that group. Just bc the movie talks about their other struggles as well doesn’t make it any less LGBT. They are just not as flamboyant as many other ppl are about it.

I get a little weird when people categorize this as an lgbtq movie bc it’s so unlike any lgbtq film. It’s really just a deep film about circumstances, and longing for connection. The lgbt aspect is so minimal but powerful.
