I am so not ready for next episode, despite having rewatched it twice in these past couple of weeks. (also, apologies, 'bout to get wordy lol) I do want to take a moment to talk about this show's use of flashbacks and handling of its characters' trauma through each season, especially when it comes to Anne. Anne's flashbacks were immersive and all-consuming in season 1, when everything was still so fresh. We would have pretty lengthy scenes of her trauma playing out as if it were happening actively with echoes lingering even after she came back into reality. We also got periods of disassociation. In season two, with Anne older and a little more removed from the trauma and triggers (as well as having the experience of a loving, stable family), we get far fewer flashback scenes. If I remember correctly, what we do get is a mixture of some immersive actual scenes of trauma and a greater proportion of times where she's triggered and experiences an echo of what she's dealt with but is able to stay in reality mostly. Now in season 3, we do as you guys saw get kind of a flashback in the form of fleeting images of a younger Anne. However, she basically stays engaged in the real world even when dealing with flashbacks. They are a ghost of trauma now, lingering and impactful, and her past haunts Anne, still, but she can see through it and it no longer has the same hold on her, nor does she need to disassociate or "become someone else" (through reading, imagination, etc.) to cope now. She still feels things deeply, is affected by her trauma, and experiences flashbacks, but can remain herself throughout and even lean on friends. Now, that was all a lot and I wouldn't blame anyone for not reading it, so TLDR; this show handles trauma beautifully on every level, and the way it threads Anne's PTSD flashbacks in different ways throughout the seasons perfectly portrays the fluidity of how complex trauma manifests over time, which is encapsulated in the treatment of flashbacks over time (especially with Anne, though we've also seen stirring examples with Marilla and Matthew as well). It's a topic usually only referenced in passing but goddamn is it commendable. Anne was one of the first characters to make me feel seen as a kid, and I love this show for not just living up to book Anne but for really staying true to what her experience would have been, even when it's hard to look at. Finally: the increased vibing to the opening credits song is my favorite thing in every video fr. P. S. please oh please tell me I wasn't seeing things and Rob is wearing a Yu Yu Hakusho shirt?!?!
