Its not like it makes any BUSINESS sense for Tom to let go of Shiv, which makes it that much harder to believe for Shiv that he does actually love her. To me this scene was just Tom admitting that yes, money and status did and still do play a role in him choosing her, but reminding her that she is just obsessed with status and money as him....
