Just for clarification esther is NOT the first witch. The woman who helped her Ayanna is actually a ancestor of bonnie and as far as we know witches are the oldest and only natural species that go wayyyy farther back then the originals and wolves. Shes called the original witch because shes the witch of the ORIGINAL family

Just a quick spoiler-free summary to reconcile all we've learnt so far so that it all makes sense for you guys and less confusing: • Esther (the mother) had 7 children in total: 1 child died in the Old World (unnamed - I feel like they said it was because of a disease/plague or something?), so they moved to the New World (modern-day Mystic Falls) where the werewolves were. 1 child (Henrik) then died in the New World because he was killed by the werewolves. That leaves 5 - we know Elijah, Klaus and Rebekah now. That leaves 2 others unnamed in the coffins. • Klaus is a bastard child - the only one out of all his siblings. Esther had cheated on the father (Mikael) with another man who was a werewolf (unnamed), and she got pregnant and had Klaus. Everyone else is both Esther's and Mikael's biological children. • Klaus has the werewolf gene because of his biological father's (the unnamed dad) side. • The Original Family were all technically humans before turning into the first vampires (Klaus was a human with the werewolf gene). However, Esther was a powerful witch. In that sense, that means all her children were witches but their powers weren't developed yet. • Klaus' werewolf gene wasn't triggered until he made his first kill when he got turned into a vampire. So no one knew about him being a bastard child until they all turned into vampires. • When Klaus made his first kill as a vampire, that triggered his werewolf gene. Everyone found out and that is why Esther put the curse on him to suppress his werewolf side (hence the curse he was trying to break in S2 to unleash his werewolf side again and become the first hybrid). • Mikael seems to have issues with Klaus even before he knew he was a bastard child. He seems like an abusive, violent guy in general. • Esther is called the Original Witch only because she's the mother of the 'Original Family' [Originals as in the first vampires]. She's not the first witch. • Esther is the only one who was not turned into a vampire because she had to perform the spell herself to turn the others, as Ayanna refused. So she couldn't turn herself.
