Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) - Reel-Timers MM #26 Early Access/Watchalong!

Comments

Did yall watch with subtitles? I think you missed most of the dialogue, tbh.

Mariah Fallon

I think the flashing blue lights are because Bridget lives just under a railway bridge and its the flashes from the train going by above. Her flat is so iconic, its just on the edge of borough market which is a popular market in London. That's also why she was walking through it in her bunny costume (the peaky blinders place) so that she could get home. Loved the reaction such a good romcom!

Sophie Harris

"I’ve seen him shirtless in the water and I wouldn’t mind seeing it again," lol, Bryce. Thanks for reacting to this, guys, it was so fun.

I hope you guys do watch the rest of the Bridget Jones’s Diary films because they are pretty iconic and I still believe that the films and books(which I still need to get and read) are probably such big successes because of how relatable the characters are, especially Bridget herself. A 32/33 year old who hasn’t really ever had a boyfriend and having to watch almost everyone around her really enjoy their life. A lot of them being successful and getting married, having kids and everything which is something she longs for. Also the constant questions and pressures she has of settling down. I think most of us can relate to at least some of the characters and even Bridget for many reasons especially as we enter our late 20’s and early 30s.

Yeah it’s actually wild because even growing up as a young girl and watching these films I have never thought she was big at all. She just has curves. Her stomach is literally flat. But again in the early 2000’s anyone with curves seemed to be thought to be big when it’s just utterly false! 🫶🏼

Notting Hill is goooood🥰

Which is great, because it is absolutely insane. I am more speaking about girls who hadn't matured enough yet to know this. I saw this movie when I was still basically a child and it messed with my head ( many other girls my age too). I suppose an entire generation is hyperbole, but it is pretty common even now to see celebrities called fat when they are not.

Honestly, this movie hasn't aged well for many different reasons but it's still a guilty pleasure. I was always rooting for Mark. Daniel is just the ultimate fuckboy and I ain't got no time for that. Also, Hugh Grant was handsome back in his day (and a bit of a fuckboy himself) but Colin Firth is just 🔥 And I fully believed that Renée Zellweger was British for the longest time. She practiced by speaking with the accent all the time on set, even while not shooting. Hugh Grant once said that he did not hear her speak in her native accent until the wrap party. Her casting initally caused quite a controversy, with many fans of the books (yes, this is based off of a book series) outraged over the fact that they hired an American actress for the role, but people quickly changed their minds after seeing the movie and her performance received praise as well as an Oscar nomination. Shirley Henderson was 36/37 when she played Moaning Myrtle in Harry Potter. Funnily enough, her character here often cries in the bathroom. Jim Broadbent (Bridget's father) played Prof. Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows Part 2. Gemma Jones (Bridget's mother) played Madam Pomfrey in HP as well. Embeth Davidtz (Natasha) played Miss Honey in Matilda. The movie Bridget was watching is Fatal Attraction, starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close. The term "bunny-boiler" comes from that movie and you'll know why if you watch it. Fun fact: The fight scene between Mark and Daniel wasn't choreographed and was improvised by the actors. And since you mentioned it, not sure about the rest of the movie, but the snowy scenes during the end were filmed during summertime. There are two sequels with quite a gap between them (12 years) and the 4th coming out on Valentine's Day next year. And please just do Scream 6 too so we can FINALLY finish the series (until the 7th comes out)!!

Yassss finally! I had so much fun rewatching this classic with you boys ❤️❤️❤️

Kt

It wasn't really this movie that caused them to think she was fat. It was a product of the times. Today it's popular to be curvy. Back the. It was popular to be super thin with as little curves as possible. That's the thing...trends always change and in 20 years it will probably be something completely different!

Terri

I just find it amusing how this is a modern pride and prejudice adaptation and he’s playing the same character as he did in the 1995 pride and prejudice .

Kristal Whalen

Oh I love notting hill

Loved this!!! I can absolutely confirm you all had the correct reaction to the Hugh Grant lake scene. 😍 Definitely recommend looking up Salman Rushdie if you haven't heard of him btw. His appearance in this film is one of my favourite onscreen cameos! Haha.

Maggie

Not that many women I knew thought she was fat at 135 lb. Most of the women I knew thought that was insane.

Karen Wood

I want a dance break in all Reel Time reactions, no matter the genre.

Karen Wood

"is that how you get into them?" was a wild question and i nearly cried laughing

sanrac

yayyyy!!! is vampire diaries still going up tonight too?

Emily

The movie that Bridget was watching after she found out she was the other woman is "Fatal Attraction". Also, unrelated.......it's insane how an entire generation of women were gaslit into believing that Bridget Jones was fat at 135 lbs.

sarah

YAY! IVE BEEN WAITING A FEW YEARS FOR THIS!

Emily G

Ayyyyyyyy

Alana

I’m SO ready!

Katie M.

As much as I love romcoms, for some reason I have managed to avoid watching two of the most popular ones starring Hugh Grant (this and Notting Hill). Guess it's finally about time!

Cindy S.

Ahhh one of my favorites!!

Neftaly Duran

finally!! this is an absolute classic ❤️

Syd

The way I've wanted this reaction for ages!!!!

Hannah Bond
