Jennifer Lynn Connelly ( Cairo , New York , December 12, 1970) is an American actress and model . She began her career as a child model before making her acting debut in Sergio Leone 's film Once Upon a Time in America (1984). A year later, she performed her first leading role in Dario Argento 's horror film Phenomena , and in 1986 she gained recognition by participating alongside David Bowie in Jim Henson 's fantasy film Labyrinth . After starring in the romantic comedy Career Opportunities (1991) and the adventure film The Rocketeer (1991), he received critical acclaim for his performance in the science fiction film Dark City (1998) and the drama Requiem for a Dream ( 2000).
