I think Alaric no longer being an original so Elena remains compelled is lazy writing. When in Season 2 they showed us that when an original dies or is daggered the compulsion is lifted. If anything the compulsion should have been lifted. I think that the actors did not want to work together much anymore so this is their way of making sure they didn't have too
