They have mentioned in season 3 of TVD that Klaus and Elijah had feelings for the same girl once. It was at the famous "dinner date" with Klaus, Elijah, Stefan and Damon. After the dinner Elijah pretty much undaggered all of his siblings, hope this refreshes your memory. Elijah mentioned that their mother murdered her and used her blood to turn them into vampires. As we know now, it was only partly true. Esther did use Tatia's blood to create the vampire species, but never actually killed her. They never mentioned in the TVD that she was also a doppelganger, so maybe that's why you guys don't remember.
