Adolescence Episode 2 EXTRA Early Access/Watchalong

Comments

People in the comments seem to be giving these guys a hard time, it's almost impossible for Americans to understand British/English school culture. Hard for them to tell what is dramatized and what is realistic, makes sense for them not to notice the subtle social commentary. Personally my school was even worse but thankfully I just avoided the social media bollocks. Couldn't imagine being a kid nowadays.

Jack

Some of y’all are jumping the gun a bit icl 😭 They went into the show blind and assumed it’s a crime drama not a social commentary. This episode does present the bullying as a big break in the case/major reveal, it’s not until ep 3 that the point of the series and Jamie’s thoughts are revealed. As people who knew nothing about the show they’re following along just fine imo.

Halima

That’s more in the 3rd episode

Sumaya

literally 😭

Sumaya

bryce u look so fine today 🫣

Sumaya

They attached the camera to a drone

Sophie

there got British schools so well😭

Sophie

I would give them some grace, after I watched the first two episodes even as a woman both me and my mom thought it was still a whodunit. I always believed it was Jamie but my mom was guessing just like the guys. I never knew anything about this show I only checked it out because a coworker said it was amazing but didn’t describe it to me. I feel like after the third episode I fully understood the message of the show, they kind of paint it as a whodunit in the first two episodes at least in my opinion. I appreciate the discussion in the comments and further explanation it helps me understand the message even more!

Michelle

i love y’all, but wow, the true message of the show is really flying over your heads. it‘a not as simple as katie being a bully leading to jamie killing her. there are obviously obviously deep issues that jamie has that distorts his views on women and causes him to behave the way he does. the main message is not that katie was randomly bullying him which led to jamie killing her. it really showcases how easy it is for (mostly) men to resort to violence especially with women when things don’t go smoothly/the way they want, and how society almost normalizes it through media for young boys to consume

lilly

Lastly, it’s random but just cuz he’s buff doesn’t mean he does a lot of cardio lol. You’d be surprised how many gym bros only focus on lifting. And I know it was for technical reasons but that was the slowest foot chase I’ve ever seen 😂

M

I really like the dynamic between Adam & his dad in this episode. They live under the same roof but don’t really connect cuz they’re so different which happens all too often. I think this show really focuses on the importance of positive male role models for young men and that final scene with those two is DI Bascombe trying to step up and be that for his son regardless - so he doesn’t end up in that same kind of situation.

M

Y’all might be missing the point a bit when it comes to what the show is about/why it’s important or the scene with Adam explaining everything to his dad but hopefully it’ll become more clear in the next couple episodes. It’s not as simple as “Katie was bullying Jamie” or the show being about “online bullying” moreso on specific rhetoric that’s pushed online but again hopefully it becomes more clear with the final 2 episodes.

M

this!!! also, the show made it a point to bring up andrew tates name. it’s a clear hint that jamie & his friends were most likely watching things like that. theres a high chance he was acting like an incel or being deliberately misogynistic because of the media he consumes without parental supervision. (the next episode really solidifies this).

mai

violence against women and girls was announced as a national emergency in 2024 in the UK. This show helps to reflect that and raise awareness.

Olivia

couldn’t have said it better myself.

Lia Brooks

Well said. I’m happy someone was able to articulate what I was thinking so well because I was so annoyed 😭 Thank you!!

Shanice British

You’re right, well said! That’s a great point.I felt like that scene was also an interesting highlight of communication gaps in parent-child relationships or familial relationships. Adam is trying to talk to his dad, but his father isn’t actively listening or creating space for the conversation—he’s overtaking it. Even in a stable or present family dynamic, there’s still tension between what parents think they understand about their children and the reality of their experiences.

Talie

It’s also interesting that Bascombe jumped on the idea that Katie was “bullying” Jamie when that’s actually not what Adam was saying. He just wanted to give his dad context, that Katie wasn’t friends with Jamie, that her messages weren’t friendly, the way the detectives had assumed. It’s possible Adam was trying to explain to his dad that Jamie was aggressive towards Katie which caused her responses on Instagram. But you’re right, people immediately jump to bullying, probably because it’s easier to understand and justifies what they don’t understand, Jamie’s unprovoked violence that night.

Crystal Pritchard

I want to start by saying that I enjoy your content, but I hope there might be some reflection on how easily people accepted the idea that Katie was a bully—without any real evidence—rather than asking why she called Jamie an incel in the first place. Meanwhile, even with clear video proof of him committing the crime—watching Katie walk away before chasing after her and brutally killing her—there is still hesitation to believe he actually did it. Instead, people are willing to entertain every possible alternative theory to explain away his actions, while unquestioningly accepting the idea that Katie must have provoked him. Even the detective, someone whose job is to rely on facts, takes a single claim from someone who barely knew them and immediately jumps to the conclusion that Katie bullied him. This reaction reflects a much bigger issue: the instinct to scrutinize a victim’s actions rather than hold a perpetrator accountable. That’s why Jade was so frustrated—because, as a female, she knew exactly how this would play out. Instead of asking, Was Jaime an incel? Why would Katie call him that? What did he do to her?, people assume the worst of her while making excuses for him. There’s a noticeable lack of critical thinking when it comes to her perspective, yet endless attempts to rationalize his behavior. I understand that it might be shocking to some that someone so young could commit such a violent murder, but this is the reality for women and girls every minute of every day around the world. The real significance of this show isn’t that young men are being bullied online, but that even in the face of undeniable evidence, society still hesitates to hold violent men accountable while instinctively searching for ways to blame female victims. There are more significant points that have been hinted out and hopefully will come more to light as you continue watching the show. That’s what makes this story so important, and it’s disappointing to see so many missing that point. I had hoped this show would spark more awareness of these patterns rather than being reduced to a conversation about bullying, when that is not the real issue at play. Anyway - I’m not leaving this comment to judge or attack at all. I still love your content and have great respect for your voices. I just hope that by the end of the show the point isn’t lost in a “bullying” issue and the show can make the impact it was hoping to achieve.

Talie

I love how everyone knows that Jaime killed Katie and Zuff is like maybe his friends dressed like Jamie and did it 😭😭😂😂 I love Zuff

Shanice British

it's funny how a lot of reactors dont rlly seem to get it. this isnt a murder mystery/whodunnit, this is a social commentary on modern youth

rice ✿

I disagree that the show frames the motive as bullying. That’s just the information we learn in this episode before the bigger picture becomes clearer. But I do agree that the searching for a motive can seem like trying to find fault in the victim, especially to people who loved Katie like Jade. I guess from Bascombe’s perspective he’s just trying to wrap his head around how a 13 year old boy could do this to another child. But from his efforts to connect with his son at the end it’s clear he’d clocked on to what might’ve went down between these boys and Katie.

Halima

I KNEW I recognised her from somewhere thank you 😭

Halima

In my opinion, Bascombe jumping on the idea that Katie was bullying Jamie is providing a reason he can understand for why he murdered her. I don’t think he’s trying to blame Katie for it, but it’s the kind of thought process that can end with “well what was she wearing” type questions. I don’t want to go into too much detail about why I don’t think Katie was bullying Jamie because I don’t know if the guys have seen episode 3, but we start to understand why Katie said the things she did to Jamie. It didn’t happen in a vacuum, and she didn’t start it. She’s responding to unwanted advances, which to me isn’t bullying.

Crystal Pritchard

I think that's a bit misguided to say that looking for a motive is looking for a reason to blame the victim. Also, Katie was absolutely bullying Jamie with what she was saying on his IG, we just don't really know why people started with the whole incel jabs toward those boys. And of course her bullying him isn't justification to murder her, it gives context to the larger picture of why which is almost always what people are left wondering

Mike

Oh, and since Bryce was talking about who DS Frank reminded him of, that's the same actress that played the Waif on Game of Thrones.

Brieanne

I think the show was trying to say that Adam and his dad (the lead detective) have a strained relationship because they don't spend much time together. If you listen closely when Adam goes to talk to his dad and it seems his dad is not really listening to him, he starts to say "no it's fine, I'm sure you have other things to do like work out or work on the case" or something like that. Seems like Adam comes last on his list and it's clear we see that Adam is being bullied at school, etc. and his dad doesn't really know much about him at all. I think this is important because we see at the end there, after the detective starts to really realize what this case is about (social media and incel culture having such an influence over these boys) and sees how his son is getting treated at school it clicks for him that maybe he needs to step up and be there more for his son otherwise what happened with Jaime or just something bad in general could just as easily happen with his own son. That's why he wants to stay with his son at the end and spend some time with him, he's definitely rethinking his parenting choices up to this point because of this case. It's such an interesting show. Episodes 3 and 4 were in my opinion the best of the show, can't wait to see what you guys thing of those.

Brieanne

One thing I didn’t noticed until this rewatch with you guys is that Bascombe starts to tell Jade that they’re not asking her to talk “bad” about Katie and she interrupts and says they are. The subtitles only go so far as to say they are not trying to make her “talk-” and then Jade interrupts. I know this is the whole point of the show but i still think it’s interesting that in trying to find a motive, they are essentially trying to find the reason, or justification, for why Jamie killed Katie, which is looking to blame her. I disagree that Katie was bullying Jamie and I hate that the show frames it that way, but even if she was bullying him, it doesn’t justify Jamie taking her life, nothing can justify him murdering her.

Crystal Pritchard

next episode is so ridiculously good I can’t wait!

Halima

I liked what Bryce said about the lack of cuts in episode 1 making him feel anxious because that was 100% the intention of filming the show this way. It’s a sensitive subject so the producers wanted it to feel as immersive and intimate as possible.

Halima

Zuff saying “they just threw the camera up there” about the drone shot LMAO 😭 But nah they just quickly attached the camera to a waiting drone to capture that overhead shot. The BTS of this episode was really cool to see, especially the shot through the window.

Halima

I understand parents think their child wouldn’t be capable of something like this but the internet and things that are said can warp a young mind. Children are easily manipulated, sadly. Enjoying the reactions and commentary from the dudes. So excited to see their reaction to the rest of it! And I’m glad this is getting more awareness.

Brittany Popka

literally watching this ep the first time made me uncomfortable because it took me back 😭

ruby

im pretty sure the cast said the girl singing at the end is katie’s actress so that makes it hit even harder 💔

ruby

this show is such a perfect explanation for why kids should not be on social media

bella

so many people think it’s exaggerated but nah this is fr how chaotic it is 😭

Halima

that is actually terrifying. American schools aren't much better I fear. I would be so upset if my child acted like this to a professional or any adult really.

Lizzy deG

no seriously...these reactors are have already been added to the list of men I trust

Km

I was sooo nervous to start watching this show (triggers/having kids/existing in modern society/etc.), but it really is phenomenally made and deftly handled. There's no-one I would trust to watch it with more than you guys, tbh, and I really appreciate the discussions so far. It helps not feeling like I'm watching it alone, and I think the response to these reactions so far really speaks to the safe community y'all have crafted.

Ash W

This is what the majority of schools in the UK are like. 😭
