Comments

Some great comments here and I don't have much I feel the need to add to the discussion so I'll just say something I noticed from the guys: It was neat that all 3 were wearing hats in this one because it made it really stand out how all of them had to put their heads down at the exact moment of the father collapsing in tears on the bed. Such a human response to have to look away from someone experiencing so much anguish. And I think speaks to why the choices of how this series was made in terms of cinematography were good ones - it was very emotionally affecting. And I'm glad people are putting themselves through the discomfort of watching it.

scarr

This is very important point made fantastically well. Thanks for this comment.

That last scene broke me. As a parent (girl 16, boy 13) the words "I should've done better" and tucking in that teddy bear - it shattered my heart - I often think to myself that I can do better - but like Bryce said it's also hard to be on them all the time... I don't even know what to say. Thanks for watching this and bless your hearts - Hugs from Denmark.

IAmom

Yeah I did too. It’s mostly bc of the “one take episodes” which really makes it so boring to watch. The lack of creativity in the cinematography was lackluster

Brydney

Ohh I thought that she sang in episode 4 as well. My bad!

Brittany Popka

Should definitely take a look at Little Boy Blue 💙

It's so terrifying how young boys are groomed by the "manosphere" and incel movement which ultimately spirals into misogynistic thinking and violent behavior at such a vulnerable and impressionable age - it hurts everyone regardless of gender. knife crime is a huge issue but this was also inspired by incidents where young boys have killed young girls and I love how they depicted that. Stephen Graham has mentioned how it takes a village to raise a child, the education system, community, government as well as the parents have a responsibility to different degrees in how to prevent and intervene. I couldn’t agree more because this is a huge issue that has trickled down.

Nawal

100%! they gave us a tiny bit of jade but it wasn’t nearly enough

brad

Same 🥹

Josip Buretić

I agree. The first and 3rd episodes were great for the one take but it wasn’t needed for the whole series. I would have loved to see them capture a female perspective of one of the younger girls rather it been Katie or her friend. Especially since we know pictures were sent around of Katie. She was going through stuff and I feel like it could have been even more impactful to show the juxtaposition of Katie and Jamie.

Aya

We should watch more crime inspired shows. Theres a mini series on hulu called Under The Bridge. It was very good. That was actually a who done it and was also inspired by a true story.

Aya

It would be kinda interesting if we got a spin off series where we focus on Katie and her family this time around.

Yasmine mixon

On his birthday 🥲💔

Ayruzii

No it is Aurora singing, the actress who played Katie sing in the end of second episode she is that girl that sings in the end.

Josip Buretić

you’re right, it didn’t lose out on the messaging. i just think the one take limited returning to interesting characters (jade or adam for example, or even katie. any female perspective on the violence) i think an improved version of the show would’ve still got the same reaction regardless

brad

I think it did what it set out to do, it wanted to start a conversation, to be very in the moment and up close. Which I feel makes it feel more uncomfortable to be sat there moment to moment with no cuts stewing in the feelings and questions. The government has talked about it, schools are showing it in class and starting talking about training for teachers after this. I've also seen so many reaction channels, reviews and parent groups discussing it and saying it's a must watch. So I don't think it lost out on anything by doing it this way

Hannah Miles

The actors that play the parents are childhood friends in real life, I think that really helped with the ability to do this feeling like an established relationship of years within the one take of the episode. Them all trying to make everything happy and normal, but you can see the struggle to keep it up and try not to react in anger or upset

Hannah Miles

idk i kinda thought this show was really overhyped. i liked the story, the actors were talented & the one shot is … cool? but it limited the storytelling so was it a worthy sacrifice in the end? idk. kinda think the story on increased violence against women (esp in the UK) deserved a better story

brad

So glad you guys reacted to this one, such an important show and I love hearing all your insight. If you’re looking for another short show, you should watch The Pitt! The finale airs this week and it’s just incredible, I was hooked from the get go, I think you’d love it!

Isabella

I know! That moment was actually improvised by Stephen Graham. Truly an incredible actor. Loved this show and just the amount of work that went into it by everyone involved is amazing. Also, the actress who played Katie is the one singing in the background during this!

Brittany Popka

Something that I think was slightly glossed over this episode was the impact of Jamie’s parent’s dynamic on his behavior. Y’all kept saying how “good” the family was and I agree they had some lovely moments this episode and what he did is NOT directly their fault. But we do see the dad continuously explode and the mom continuously swallow her own feelings to accommodate his and always trying to make everything better. To be clear I think all the emotions he’s feeling are valid and most people may react the same way - I’m not trying to demonize him at all. I just mean Jamie has a temper similar to his dad (though his dad has better control/different influence & motivations). Growing up Jamie saw his dad’s temper and how his mom responded to it firsthand. That plus (and much more so!) what he was being influenced by online created a toxic storm. Which is why we see Jamie really only worried about what his dad thinks and barely wanting to engage with his mom/sister. It’s like nature vs nurture - the nature is that temper they both have while the nurture is what they do with that temper and how it’s addressed. If addressed correctly Jamie could’ve turned out a completely different way. While his Dad is a bit brutish I wouldn’t say he’s part of THAT community moreso just a realistic portrayal of a man of his time … and Jamie is a man of HIS time with this kind of content being constantly fed to him - that’s part of his “nurturing”. The dad could have potentially ended up the same way if he was born in 2010’s instead of the 1970’s. Again I think the bigger issue is the content he’s consuming but the parents do play a part more than just not monitoring what he’s seeing online. I do think every parent especially of young boys should be aware of, look into that culture and address it if they haven’t already. But it can be hard as a parent to monitor everything especially as a kid gets older and it can also be hard to be the perfect example to your kids. There’s really no perfect solution or perfect way to raise children - really just try your best (which I think they did) and be aware of as much as you can when it comes to influences in your children’s lives from both the outside world and yourselves.

M

Eddie in the last scene in his son's room and just bawling always gets me in tears😭😭

Namjoon'sWife

What a warning for every person that is a parent or wants to be one. Nowadays your kids are even more in danger inside their rooms with all the nasty social media that we consume. And the way they showed how painful these cases are for everyone involved… 💔 soul crushing

Andie

You should watch 'Little Boy Blue', which is about a case in Liverpool (where I'm from and Eddie (Jamie's dad in the series) real actor is actually from) about a little boy called Rhys Jones who was accidentally killed in the cross fire by gangs (all a true story) but Stephen Graham who plays Eddie (Jamie's dad) plays the lead police detective who worked the case. It is graphic and there is a lot of gun talk/gang violence etc... involved so I don't know the regulations around YouTube and stuff, but it is amazing in telling the story and the acting is phenomenal. It really makes you feel every emotion they're portraying. Stephen Graham really is an amazing actor. I do think it would be a good watch!

Annie.K18

also, i think another important thing to point out. yes, it is not the parents direct fault that jamie killed a girl. but they do bear responsibility for watching over him and monitoring the things that he's consuming online. as a parent, IT IS your job to do the best of your ability to raise your kids to have good moral character. while jamie's parents are great, they obviously DID fail to protect him from the dangers of the internet and such

lilly

Eddie tucking in the bear at the end and saying he’s sorry gets me every time 💔

Halima

love this episode

Major

(also nonce means like paedo or can be used to call someone a sexual predator in general) edit: and black pudding is a pork blood sausage

Halima

Off topic but I need rob to make a song. He sings so good.

Taijah Slye

i cannot watch the ending scene without crying

lilly

ready to sob for this one

Halima

Was waiting on this- such a feat to be brilliantly written and acted all the way through on top of the "one-shot" episodes. Couldn't think of a better way for them to end this, as much of a gut punch as it was (god, the dad tucking in the stuffed animal absolutely obliterated me). I'm so glad I gave this show a chance and got to watch with you guys.
