Manic Analysis- "3am"

I discuss Halsey's use of diction, assonance, alliteration and imagery in the track "3am". I also discuss some of the themes and motifs throughout the song as it relates to the entire album.

This actually makes SO MUCH SENSE! Thank you for this because it definitely added another layer of meaning for me!

Ohhh, interesting! I'll have to listen to "Sorry" now!

I love manic for the honesty, and hopeless fountain kingdom for the fun nuggets of boroque drama. the literary connections in all their albums to not just shakespeare( using Romeo and Juliet as a frame for their art in HFK) but some other mythology in several songs across their albums is why I became so intrigued with their writing! This is so exciting! When the phrase "treat it like a necklace" was used I instantly thought of another time this phrasing was used. In "sorry" on hopeless fountain kingdom, the speaker is apologizing for trying on different versions of themselves like jewlery or even armor. It's very interesting and feels easter eggy!

LOVE this song, and your analysis of it! For me the lyric “always hanging on the line/ignoring every warning sign” also evokes the image of someone literally hanging themself with a phone line, which is kind of what our narrator is metaphorically doing by engaging in the self-described reckless behavior—calling everyone that they know. Does that make any sense?

Thank you so much for letting me know!

I'll definitely check that out!

i know somebody already commented about the voice message that's usually at the end of the song (if you listen to the song on streaming it'll be there) but just for some context: that's a voice message john mayer sent her about her song "without me" (which is the next one in the album, the voice message is almost like an interlude to that song), which is their biggest (solo) song as he says in the voice message :-)

Ahhhh I'm so glad you're loving the album! It only gets better!! BTW, if you listen to 3 AM, like the actual version on Spotify or Apple, there's a voice memo at the end of the song that leads into Without Me!

The more you listen to Halsey, the more you fall in love with this beautiful human’s songwriting. I was the same way. I didn’t adore Halsey’s music from the beginning, but once I listened to their lyrics, now I’m fully in love with her and saw her live in may ❤️even when they write dark and twisted lyrics on other albums it’s just so good that you can’t help but grin 😂

I’ve personally always thought the “white blue screen” meant the big digital screen behind her when she’s singing live on tour. That she just wants to be out on tour doing what she loves with the fans she loves. Especially because she mentions in the chorus about her “microphone” so I just assumed it went along with that, but I could be wrong 😊

My brother is bipolar as well and we worked nights together for awhile so I played this song daily at 3am on our way home from work😅and he always said he can definitely tell the speaker is dipping into being manic. A lot of the lyrics really hit. My fav part: “everyone that I’ve dated says they hate it cause they don’t know what to do with me. know that my identity’s always getting the best of me. I’m the worst of my enemies and I don’t even know what to do with me”

Nikki S

When Halsey sang this on the Manic tour in Europe and I believe she also has said it in an interview, she says she was calling everyone and no one was answering. Then “I know the one person who always wants to talk to me and always answers my calls! My mom!.. then my mom didn’t answer the phone, and I was freaking out. why did nobody want to talk to me?!Then I looked at the time and it was fucking 3am!” 😂

Nikki S

Not really something to react to, but the official album track has like a message on her answering machine at the end of the song that you should definitely listen to

These songs and analysis’ don’t miss 😩. Absolutely love the “And will you please pick up the f**** phone” hits so hard cuz like you said you can feel the desperation, frustration, and hurt in her voice. That line just elevates the song even more.

3am is one of my favorite tracks. It goes so hard and is such a bop, but its actually all about their insecurities and needing reassurance #relatable lol.

Agreed!!!

In terms of the music, this is definitely my favorite song from the album. I LOVE sad songs that are backed by happy music, i think it has such a strong emotional effect!!
