English Teacher Reacts to "All Too Well" (10 minute version) for the First Time

This is my unedited reaction to the 10 minute version of "All Too Well"!  A couple things to note:

1. When I uploaded this on YouTube, many commenters pointed out that the "f*ck the patriarchy" bit was probably written on the keychain and not said actually aloud by one of them. Either way, I will 100% be needing a "f*ck the patriarchy" keychain  πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

2. Also-- I always forget that our girl Taylor is a Sagittarius (Jake is also a fire sign, too)! I definitely think this adds a clever layer to the "Twin flames" line (and is perhaps an allusion to "State of Grace"), but I do think that line is very multifaceted. I stand by the rest of my analysis of that line in the video! Taylor is so brilliant when it comes to creating multiple layers of meaning!

3. I love you all, and I appreciate your support!

Im new to your patreon. Your the only one i sub to lollllll but im here for this. I swear I got dumped by Jake Gyllenhaal myself and this is how i feel πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I listened to this song 5 times last nite and cried all 5 times

Great video! Just some insight re: the β€œtwin flame” line. In her song β€œState of Grace,” which was also on Red, Taylor wrote β€œjust twin fire signs; four blue eyes.” Taylor and Jake are both fire signs (Sagittarius), so it could be a nod to that!

Thank YOU for watching!

Also, thank you so much for your kind words! I would love to have you in my class! You seem like a GREAT student, and very observant!

This is fascinating! I don't know if I agree with you about the concept of "magic", but I so see where you're coming from! Thanks for sharing your thoughts ❀❀❀

Magic isn't real. The magic they had... the falsehood, the illusion they had. My opinion of that word in describing their relationship. Just a quick thought on my re-watch β™₯ I also, as a tone sensitive person, love the shift from tragic and nostalgic in the 5 minute to that plus bitterness and spite in the 10 minute version. Anger at times. You could even say vengeful yet conceding; because it was an epic cut short with memories good and bad they both share. "you remember it all too well" I would love to be in your class, especially at a collegiate level: music and lit., creative writing, poetry, ALLITERATION and literary devices, etc. Your analysis reignites my passion that I've shared previously. Keep on KP and take care of yourself. Much love <3 <3 <3 Also the roast. He's like 40s with a 20s. It's irony on top of everything lolz

I was looking for this on youtube and that's what has made me look for you Patreon. I'm an English as a second language teacher in Brazil and Taylor Swift's songs are great for learning English since she speaks/sings so clearly and there's lot of complex vocabulary (especially folklore/evermore). There's also a class in our Master course where we talk about similes, metaphor and alliteration, so your videos always help me clarify some things that I might have not understood at first. Thank you!

This comment made me smile. Thank you ❀❀❀

In case it helps: the good thing about youtube being a dick about uploading this is you have at least one new patreon πŸ‘‹πŸΌ Hello

This is a really great point, and honestly it makes my heart hurt for her back then. Body image is always difficult, and to add that into the mix here adds another layer of heartbreak! Thank you for sharing!

I'm very delayed finally watching this. You were the first person I thought about when I heard the new lyrics and I couldn't wait for your analysis! There is one line that my initial interpretation was slightly different than yours and I think potentially more heartbreaking because I took it very literally. The line "I'm a soldier whose returning half her weight" I took as her real life struggle with her body image. I interpreted that he had been one of those voices making her feel she needed to be smaller/skinnier (which also fits with her earlier hypophora that he saw her as a jewel to make him look good and therefore needed to fit society's beauty standard). So she wasn't only trying to get over the heartbreak, but also the huge mental and physical effects from a person she loved being one of those harmful voices.

I appreciate this level of cheese. Well done!

You are so right! I love all of your connections!

I'm so happy you're here!

It’s like a whole story! An All Too Well novel even ;) (I’m so cheesy, I know)

This Ten minute version of the song makes the rest of the album make even more sense! All too well (10min) she mentions turning 21 which is immediately followed by 22 because 21 was a crappy year for her. This is followed by I almost do because she nearly gets back together with him, but the previous time that happened she felt shame and was lifeless so she realised what a terrible mistake that would be and makes the decision they are never ever getting back together. I love these 4 songs as like a mini story.

I'm proud of myself for spending $3 on this FULL OF KNOWLEDGE video.

This is such a great point that I hadn't thought of! You are right!

English Teacher KP

This was so fun to watch. One additional thought that you gave me that I hadn’t considered before is that β€œdouble crossing” someone’s mind is also the perfect description of gaslighting. It’s betraying the mind, playing tricks on the mind. And he continued to do that after they broke up, calling her up all casually cruel to gaslight her some more. And she starts that verse saying all”s well that ends well, but it didn’t end because he continued to double cross her, and even in a worse way: double crossing her mind.

Floran

I never considered that, but it makes SO MUCH SENSE! It definitely works in context! You're right....it is so sad.

I have listened to this song a million times by now and I still can't process everything! Your analysis is just spot on, I was having some trouble understanding some parts, but the way you explained cleared it all up! Also, I just have this one thing in my head since the first time I listened to the song: when she says "we were always skipping town" it makes me think of him trying to hide her/their relationship. I mean, it's almost as if he'd always find an excuse that seemed sweet and lovely, you know, like "oh we're having a romantic weekend somewhere", but when you put it together with the "you kept me like a secret" part and also her tone, I don't know, it just seems like she's finally understanding that it wasn't sweet or anything, he was just trying to hide her. And the way her voice sounds when she sings this part, it reminds me of when you start to say something and you realize mid sentence a deeper meaning to it. It is almost as if she is happily talking about how exciting and sweet these moments were and then it hits her that he was just taking her out of sight, he was taking her places so he wouldn't be seen with her. It's sad honestly.
