Analyzing Lover Tracks- Part I: "Death by a Thousand Cuts"

Comments

Idk if someone's already said it, but I couldn't find it. In her NPR Tiny Desk Concert Taylor says this song was inspired by a close girlfriend of hers who went through an awful breakup and was calling her nonstop venting about it. And she wanted to try to write a breakup song even though she's happy with Joe!

No problem! Thank YOU so much for watching!

Absolutely!

It’s definitely paper cut stings lol but it kind of adds to that idea of permanence like it’s not a massive cut, but it stings and it lingers.

I always thought of it as like “oh my my my” lol but the my my my echoed without the “lover” is absolutely haunting 🥲 thanks for helping me see that as an option and breaking my heart lol

I love this! Paper is a traditional anniversary gift, so it makes a lot of sense! Thank you so much for watching ❤❤❤

Hi English Teacher KP! New here. Just very recently discovered your YouTube channel in my recommendations and of course had to see your ATW short film reaction (loved it). I’m so glad you picked up on the word “paper” used throughout this album! I found my interpretation of this whilst listening to Paper Rings. It reminded me that a one year wedding anniversary is traditionally represented by paper. So then of course I was obsessed that Tay & Joe had secretly gotten married a year prior. There was also a lot of flower imagery when she announced the album and carnations also represent the one year anniversary. A huge leap, I know, I’m sticking with it :)

These are both great points that add to the overall heartbreak of the song 😭😭😭

As someone who was going through an agonizing slow breakup that was mutual when this song came out, I have lots of feelings here. One thing that wasn’t mentioned before is that I feel like the my, my, my, my points to the fact that their former “baby” is nothing now. It’s that period where saying: “they’re my ex” is too painful and also not true yet because it doesn’t feel like it’s in the past. But they’re also not your baby.. 😭 You don’t know what to call them. And the “morning” part of it was so relatable because you wake up and realize all over again that they’re not sleeping next to you.

Yes! Exactly! Exasperated is an excellent word to capture the spirit of that line! OMG, I love it so much! And yes-- I am so excited to do a deep-dive into all of the Lover tracks! There are some great ones!

I can't wait to do the analysis ❤❤❤

I also love "I'll be alright it's just a thousand cuts" because as a metaphor it is interchangeable with death... I'll be alright, it's just death. It's very hard to describe. Exaggerated? At a loss? Exasperated.

I own 4 variations of Lover, but I definitely sleep on it. I really want to see the analysis on Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince. But Daylight, the Archer (a top 5 track 5 for sure)… You Need to Calm Down which I think should be accompanied by the lyric video or music video cause of the correlations to the LGBTQ+ community... Really any or all of Lover is going to be a fun dive, and it's for sure going on next time I get in the car.

Can't wait for your analysis for "Daylight", it's one of my all time favs!

I don't think you're wrong at all! "Death by a thousand cuts" would certainly be a long, drawn-out death. Like I also said in the video, the process of getting over this relationship is definitely a very long process. In would also add, though, that it is a painful, tortuous process. Most people would rather die by one cut than slowly bleed out from a thousand. This breakup is absolutely agonizing!

English Teacher KP

I also (as a non-native Enlish speaker) take "death by a thousand cuts" to mean the dying takes a long time... So you get many wounds over a long period of time (because it would take ages to get a thousand non-mortal cuts ) and eventually it kills you. Thus my interpretation of the opening line would be that letting go of the relationship is a long process. But I'm not sure if I've understood this idiom wrong?

I had to re-listen to that part, but you are 100% correct! This makes the imagery so much more intense! Thank you for sharing!

English Teacher KP

Interesting!

English Teacher KP

Thank you so much for this!

The traffic lights thing I always think of as kind of bargaining like you do when you really want a certain outcome, like if the traffic light is on green then it will be ok or I should do x but if it's red it's a sign that I should do y. Because the lights are constantly changing they give both answers hence the "I don't know".

I love the way the instrumentation changes after the line about the chandelier and we hear a tinkling almost chamber music kind of sound which extends the imagery of a flickering chandelier in an old boarded up house. I always think of the song Ivy when she uses a house to represent herself or her love.

Thank you so much for this video! Just a little correction, the person who made the lyric video wrote "paper cut stains" but it's actually "paper cut stings" according to the official lyrics. I think your interpretation kind of still stands though -- stains are permanent, but paper cut stings are HELLA PAINFUL and feels like it's going to hurt forever, for that moment at least. Especially if it was a thousand of them. The imagery is strong both ways.
