Analyzing Lover Tracks- Part III: "Cruel Summer"

I analyze the lyrics of "Cruel Summer" by Taylor Swift. I discuss Taylor's use of diction, symbolism, metaphor and more!

Analyzing Lover Tracks- Part III: "Cruel Summer"

Ooohhh I like this! Great connection!

I really liked this analysis! I always thought that "sneaking though the garden gate" in this song, besides letting us know it was kind of a secret relationship, could also be yet another allusion to Romeo and Juliet (like the earlier line of "Killing me slow, out the window / I'm always waiting for you to be waiting below "), except in this context Taylor takes the rol of Romeo because she got tired of waiting at her window like Juliet.

Thank YOU for watching!

Another bop. Thank you!

Great minds think alike! I love the ending, too! Fabulous song!

The vending machine totally makes me picture it at a hotel too! I love the way you explained the devil and angel situation. Her self awareness of sealing her fate.. man I've been there too girl. The escalation of the song and ending with the screaming lyrics is genius.

I'm not sure yet! And yes-- this is such a great song! ❤❤

Close attention to the songs and the lyrics

I love your analysis! I must confess that a lover has not been an album that I listen to but your interpretation makes me want to, I think I am buying it and pay

Such a good video! I've always had issues wrapping my head around the "devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes" and "he looks up grinning like a devil" lines but I feel like I total get them now! I also noticed another typo in the video lol it's "Hang your head low In the glow of the vending machine I'm not dying" I double checked in the lyric book too because I used to think it was buying and was very surprised it was not lol

Poorly Fleshed Skeleton

OMG! You're right! Thank you for that! It definitely adds another layer of meaning!

Love this reaction!! One thing I noticed is that the lyric in the bridge is actually "he looks up grinning like a devil" which I think adds even more to the song! Even going with your interpretation of the devil always being mischievous, I think him smiling at her confession of love is almost like he knew they both caught feelings and the "torture" of this relationship was because they both had little devils on their shoulders, refusing to admit it!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching ❤❤❤

I always thought it was unbreakable heaven but then hearing your analysis I definitely think it is in breakable heaven that makes so much more sense. Great video. I love this song so much more.

Stacey Hall

I also double checked on Genius Lyrics as well as AZLyrics and the consensus seems to be that the line is "in breakable Heaven" like I thought!
