Lover Analysis: Part XIV- "The Man"

I discuss the double standards Taylor sings about in this bop! I also use Taylor's diction to analyze contrasting instances of connotation within our language. Moreover, I identify some lovely alliteration and a pretty fun allusion!

Also, forgive me for going off on a tangent about the hypothetical "were" when that isn't even relevant here. I would have sworn she was saying "If I were a man" 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ I think my brain just auto-corrected it! #englishteacherproblems 😭😭😭

Also, I don't know why my camera kept glitching. Sorry!

I love how Taylor used very specific words to emphasize this song. She used a lot of words that society associates with being masculine. Smart writing.

It's definitely strange how young some of his girlfriends are! He's a phenomenal actor, but you're right- it's 100% gross to think about!

(just my opinion) Leonardo DiCaprio is so gross -- his girlfriends' ages continuously get younger and younger as he gets older. It's alarming. I know he's not the only male actor doing that, but 🤢 Good for Taylor for calling him out, even in a broad sense. Actually, I think she probably knows a bunch of his exes who are/were Victoria's Secret models, because she became friends with those models back in her "squad" days. So imagine the crazy stuff she heard from them 😳

That is CRAZY!!! I can't believe he said that out loud 😲😲😲

It’s interesting that you brought up men showing vulnerability or emotion. I think it has become more acceptable, but it’s also created a new double standard. If a man shows that side of himself, he’s showing he’s “sensitive” or he’s “brave” for being vulnerable, a woman is referred to as “too emotional”. I once had a manager tell me to my face I would never be as good a manager as a man because men manage with their brains, but women can only manage with their emotions. I’m sorry, WHAT?

Thank you! I need to re-watch Miss Americana because I don't remember that scene! It's been a while, though!

English Teacher KP

I write for a living so I'm aware of the whole issue with the subjunctive "were" vs. "was." Do you remember the scene in "Miss Americana " when she debates with herself "was" vs "were"? She goes with "was", I guess because she thought it just sounded better. She's a better writer than I am so I'm not going to quibble. Great video,, btw.
