HFK Analysis- "Good Mourning" Analysis
Added 2023-03-03 03:13:09 +0000 UTCI discuss the diction, imagery and literary devices in this short track from the HFK album. I also explore the Romeo and Juliet motif as it relates to this song and the rest of the album so far.
Note-I apologize for how late in the day this is being uploaded. Patreon/Vimeo has been very glitchy this week!

Honey and blood are indeed mentioned before in The Prologue, the first track of the album. And it’s quite interesting that it is mentioned again in the interlude. “I am a child of a money hungry, prideful country Grass is green and it's always sunny Hands so bloody, tastes like honey I'm finding it hard to leave”.

2023-03-10 21:09:12 +0000 UTCOkay, I'm late to this video but I LOVE watching these cause they always give me so much insight into my favorite songs! I never fully understood the title being "Good Mourning" but now it makes so much sense. If the sun coming up symbolizes them having to be separate, then it's not only literally the Morning, but also it's mourning the relationship. Mind blown hahaha

2023-03-10 03:04:52 +0000 UTCShe did some live music videos for Honey and I am Not a Woman, I’m a God for her last album. For Honey she got honey poured all over her and in I am Not a Woman, I’m a God she got blood poured all over her. Coincidence? I think not. Didn’t realize how often she uses these two things!

2023-03-03 15:11:15 +0000 UTC100% I agree! Halsey answered a bunch of questions on a video for twitter answering fan Q’s back when the album came out and I really think she mentioned that as well after mentioning it was her brothers voice. Very cool and so thought out, per usual with Halsey. When I went on the Genius site there was so much info about each line. It’s something you don’t think much about as a listener if you’re not paying attention. People would skip over the track because it’s basically an interlude but it has so much meaning to the story and also tells us that we are going to switch up in the album starting next song with different mindset. Can’t wait because the next 4-5 songs in a row are some of my all time favs. (Next song has a feature which I usually skip when listening but the Halsey verse at the beginning is everything to me so I listen to her part all the time😂

2023-03-03 13:31:48 +0000 UTCOh wow! Thanks for telling me that! I just had a thought...I also think the optimism of the child's voice could also read as a bit naive....children are often optimistic to a fault...to the point of naivete. This also parallels the way people in love behave. Romeo and Juliet fits here, too!

2023-03-03 03:42:58 +0000 UTCI love that their names are literally "Sun" and "Moon". I actually talk about the root "Luna" later in the video! And I love how it's all tied to the indesisivness (sp?) of Halsey. It goes right along with the themes of Romeo and Juliet and other Shakespearean plays!

2023-03-03 03:38:04 +0000 UTCThey have 2 younger brothers and they’re extremely close ! ❤️ during the most recent tour last summer the brothers were always posting videos at the shows supporting their sis. The older one is sevian and he’s in one of Halseys music videos from manic era “clementine” where they do a dance together.

2023-03-03 03:34:36 +0000 UTC“They told me once, don’t trust the moon, she’s always changing” halsey’s character in this story is Luna. (The Romeo character is Solis) And Halsey has mentioned changing a lot while singing about their bipolar disorder. And even in the last song, Sorry they said “cause I can change my mind each day” A lot of this is kinda what the characters are feeling and the world Halsey built in their version of Romeo and Juliet. Halsey tweeted about this : “Luna is the moon, and the Sun is trying to make her different. “Flew too close to the sun” got too attached to the sun (Solis)” Yes! Like you said Luna and Solis also can only be together at night and they’re dreading being separated. And Luna’s changing makes her unreliable and that people would “bend and break for her” but she might not return that because she’s always changing. During this tour she would talk to the crowd (and in interviews) about how this man in the relationship (her ex Lido) tried to change her, and she lost who she really was. How she was never alone and when she was finally alone she would think to herself “what am I going to wear without him standing over me telling me what to wear? What song am I going to listen to in the car without him telling me we can’t listen to my favorite music” etc.

2023-03-03 03:25:53 +0000 UTCThe speaking part was Halsey’s brother, Dante when he was 12 years old at the time.❤️
