HFK Analysis- "Hopeless"

I discuss this last track of Hopeless Fountain Kingdom while touching on the motifs found in the album, the Romeo and Juliet allusions scattered throughout, and the overarching philosophical questions/implications the reader is left to ponder.

You make such a great point with bringing up the contextual significance of "Bad at Love"! I also like how hopeful this is!

I haven’t watched this reaction yet because I’m so sad this journey is over lol. Also had to say Halsey has a tattoo on her buttcheek that says “hopeless” lol I adore this song so much! One of my favs!

I’m a fairly new subscriber here on Patreon, though I’ve watched you on YouTube for a long time. I just love how you don’t rush your reaction but instead really try to understand what you’re listening to, which helps me understand the songs so much more, especially since English isn’t my first language. It really makes me appreciate the lyrics in a song much more than I did before, where it kinda just went right over my head, so thank you for that!✨✨✨✨✨✨

Whenever I’m feeling down or sad, it can feel like things will never get better (I know you can relate lol). But “I hope hopeless changes over time” is the desperate plea that things will get better. I feel like I can hear her desperation in her “ohs”. It does sound alien, but it also reminds me of how it can sound when you are trying to talk while crying.

I know you said you loved thematic elements of the characters Luna & Solis, but to take it a step further if you watch the videos or look at the characters wardrobe Lunas outfits are very firey and bright where as Solis is only ever wearing white and silver which is a very interesting choice i feel because in nature they're the other way around. Its almost giving me the inclination our speakers been gaslit into thinking she cant control the cycles, shes been tricked, shes told shes a hopeless nutcase pretty much and they're clearly not. The houses were divided as Angelus and Aureum which also COOL and theatrical. in the beginning of the song i hear that the speakers mocking partner by reiterating everything the other person lied about. Boy, you make it look so easy* (maybe not necessarily gendering the other person but using the word as an exclamation)* 'Promise that I'm gonna call you back in five' *an example of a lie the speaker was told 'Sorry, baby girl, but I can't tonight',(*this person is detached oh Boy, you make it look so simple, mm 'Yeah, I've known that girl for like my whole life'(*minimizing the speaker for feeling untrustworthy and making them feel crazy 'Back in my hotel, and I'm alone inside' Another example of a lie and where alone is never REALLY alone Also there's this theme sonically that halsey plays with sirens (both folkloric and mechanical) and I don't know if I'm the only one who's noticed because I'm neurotic BUT it signals to me that the speaker at the time is saying I'm a hurricane, these are the sirens, and in manic we discussed warning signs, and in if I cant have love I want power there's the lighthouse and it's a very stormy mermaidy man hunting kind of tone. It all depends on how closely you look at their work. Like Monet.

Love this song, never thought about it too deeply it was just bop lol, but very interesting and seemingly spot on analysis, thank-you for this incredible journey! 🫶🏾

I absolutely adore this song, it's one of my favorites out of the album, and tbh I don't really know why. Halsey wrote HFK about her previous relationship at the time and sort of the starcrossed nature of it all. And so I think the second verse is after they've broken up, like how he actually is turning the radio off to ignore her now-famous songs, but I'm not sure exactly who's talking throughout. I always heard it in her voice, but like with dialogue from him "Sorry babygirl but I can't tonight". Something about the last line "I hope hopeless changes over time" gives me chills every time. Especially in the context of the song Bad At Love where she's basically saying the reason relationships fail is because of her, she's just bad at it. To end with the idea that maybe one day one won't fail is so aptly hopeful.
