Dance Fever Analysis- "Cassandra"

I discuss the use of diction, allusion, alliteration, metaphor and more in this Dance Fever track. I also discuss how Florence uses motifs of religion and gender to create an overall disoriented tone.

Dance Fever Analysis- "Cassandra"

Hey! Just a bit on Florence's personal history. She's actually a naturalized American citizen through her Mother and has dual US and UK citizenship. There's a lot of social commentary in her music about things going on in the US.

Oh wow! Very cool! Thank you for sharing that!

English Teacher KP

Thank you so much! YOU are incredible, and I appreciate you!

Oh wow! I will have to listen to the acoustic version for sure; this one freaked me out 😭😭😭 I am so glad you enjoyed my analysis, though! And thank you for the context!

English Teacher KP

Thank you for this context! That definitely does help!

This is one of my favourites!! Extra bit of context of why she made the Cassandra link, Florence has mentioned that her songs are sometimes a bit prophetic where they end up taking on more meaning way after she wrote them but it's a bit useless because she doesn't understand that until after the future event. It's something she discusses a little in her lyrics and poetry book "Useless Magic". There's an acoustic version of Cassandra on the deluxe album where the spoken word bit is a bit less creepy if you prefer that 😂 love your analysis as always! :)

Great video English Teacher KP! I absolutely think you're right with the allusion to the myth of Cassandra. Just to expand upon that a bit, I feel like she's likening the loss of her personal gift (her singing, voice, the general ability to make music) due to the unprecedented pandemic to how Cassandra was given her gift but it was similarly made almost ineffective because no one would listen to her. I feel like the subject of "you" is actually direct address to us, her audience, because we couldn't see or hear her perform (her gift) during the pandemic. Also, the bridge with "Take me back, oh drunken gods of slaughter..." makes a bit more sense with the context of her personal history of alcoholism and general chaotic mindset which she's sung and openly spoke about before. Hence, why she was "always the favourite daughter" of these violent gods, and almost thinks it might be easier to return to that state rather than potentially face with the uncertainty of the present and the future.

New to your Patreon and have been binging all the Dance Fever videos. You're amazing! Hope everything goes well with the move

This song is a fan favorite because not only is it an illusion to the myth of Cassandra, but it also references to the idea in a previous song called June from Florence's album, High As Hope. June is also a fan favorite, I won't spoil what it's about in case you venture to her other albums (which are also an amazing listening)
