This movie is set in the 80s, when it was illegal even to be gay at all, so the 7-year age gap between a 17 year old and a 24 year old was hardly seen as transgressive at the time. The bigger issue was Elio coming of age as gay and Oliver being sexually fluid and then starting a lifelong history.
