"So, Lin Xuanzhu's nemesis is Lin Yingjie? His principal objective for vengeance is also Lin Yingjie?" Xuan Yuan inquired. His tone was void of surprise as he examined the plot shared by System 0617 through his divine sense.
The reason Xuan Yuan embraced the storyline and sought information about the task from System 0617 was his resolution to fulfill these missions.
Though, given Xuan Yuan's abilities, it would be a simple matter for him to sever ties with the system and these myriad small worlds. Still, he had to concede that something in 0617's words had struck a chord with him.
Xuan Yuan yearned to live varied lives, to behold differing landscapes, to journey across multiple worlds, and to grow even stronger. Perhaps traversing each world was a form of test for him.
The narrative of this small world originated from a script about a bastard son who, upon awakening, inexplicably acquired knowledge spanning from astronomy to geography (Xuan Yuan suspected a case of body possession). Subsequently, he aced the imperial examinations, wedded the princess, became a royal son-in-law, and finally rose to power as an influential minister who held sway over both the royal court and the common people.
While Lin Yingjie enjoyed a life of success and satisfaction, commanding power, presiding over a harem of wives and concubines, and living a life of wealth and prestige, Lin Xuanzhu and his mother were merely minor obstacles on his path to success, effortlessly cast aside by Lin Yingjie.
"Yes, Lin Yingjie is the primary adversary, but we must not allow the other accomplices to escape!" 0617 exclaimed in Xuan Yuan's Sea of Consciousness, "To accomplish the mission with one hundred percent success, no one involved can be spared!"
Xuan Yuan nodded, his expression unchanging: "I understand." Since these individuals were Lin Xuanzhu's enemies and he had assumed his body, bearing his karma, it was only natural for him to repay each one of them on Lin Xuanzhu's behalf.
As for the innocence of these individuals, was it justified to seek retribution on those who hadn't yet harmed Lin Xuanzhu? In the mind of a sword cultivator, what constitutes justice? Their justice was embodied in the sword they wielded.
At this point, Lin Yingjie was just beginning to experience possession. He was half a year away from stunning everyone as the top-ranked imperial scholar. System 0617 felt there was ample time. Seeing that Xuan Yuan was brimming with confidence, it cheerfully frolicked within his Sea of Consciousness, keenly anticipating Xuan Yuan's successful retaliation against Lin Yingjie.
"Come in." It was the regular time for Lin Xuanzhu to awaken. Xuan Yuan summoned in a deep voice, and two maids, garbed in jade-green dresses, gently pushed the door open and walked past the screen with poise. One held a basin of water, while the other carried a set of toiletries. They were Lin Xuanzhu's personal maids who attended to his daily routines.
As the two maids approached, Xuan Yuan furrowed his brow and commanded coldly, "Set the items down and depart!"
"Heir Apparent..." The maids exclaimed in surprise, but under Xuan Yuan's icy stare, they trembled and dared not defy him. Swiftly, they placed the items down and hastened out.
After freshening up, Xuan Yuan pondered for a moment and then set out for the primary residence within Luoning Marquis Manor, the home of Lin Xuanzhu's birth mother, Lady Li.
Lin Xuanzhu harbored three wishes: revenge, displaying filial devotion to his mother, and realizing his ambitions.
Having decided to complete the mission, Xuan Yuan was determined to execute it to the best of his ability. Such was his attitude.
"Heir Apparent, you've arrived." As soon as Xuan Yuan entered the main living area, a woman clothed in a blue satin dress, Aunt Yun, greeted him. She was Lady Li's dowry maid, who had served her faithfully for many years and was a person Lady Li deeply trusted.
Beaming, Aunt Yun led Xuan Yuan towards the primary room of the living quarters, "Madam has been yearning for you, and here you are, paying her a visit. Indeed, the hearts of a mother and child are linked."
"Zhu'er." The graceful woman seated elegantly at the table in the main room unveiled a warm, affectionate smile. She beckoned Xuan Yuan to approach, "Mother was just about to have breakfast. You probably haven't eaten either, so you can join Mother."
Lady Li's health had declined after giving birth to Lin Xuanzhu, and he was her only son. She didn't even have a daughter, thus all her maternal affection was directed towards Lin Xuanzhu. It wasn't hyperbolic to say that she held him as the center of her universe, her most cherished.
Having been an orphan from a young age, Xuan Yuan had never experienced such unconditional maternal love. Now, with Lady Li treating him with such kindness, waves of emotion inevitably stirred within him.
Tempering of the heart... Xuan Yuan seemed to understand some profound mystery, gaining a vague insight. At this moment, he felt that staying here and persisting in this role could bring about unexpected benefits. His previous apathy towards living for another's cause and accomplishing the mission was beginning to wane.
Patiently, Xuan Yuan joined Lady Li for the morning meal. Emulating Lin Xuanzhu's typical demeanor - as gentle as jade yet inherently dignified - he didn't raise any suspicions in Lady Li. The interaction between mother and son was harmonious, and the ambience in the main living area was exceptionally warm.
After breakfast, Xuan Yuan, who ordinarily would retreat to the study to read as part of his routine, paused and glanced at Lady Li, saying warmly, "Mother, I plan to venture outside the manor today."
"That sounds like a wonderful idea. You've been devoting so much time to your studies at home recently and have indeed slimmed down a bit. It would be beneficial to enjoy the spring weather and take a breather outdoors," Lady Li always pampered Lin Xuanzhu, striving to fulfill his every wish. In her heart, Lin Xuanzhu was the most perfect son in the world.
Xuan Yuan's expression was subtle, yet his eyes and brows carried a trace of warmth reminiscent of Lin Xuanzhu.
In terms of looks, Lin Xuanzhu was incredibly handsome, much like Lady Li, but his features were even more delicate and attractive, with an added dash of masculine elegance. Now, with Xuan Yuan's tranquil expression and remarkable demeanor, he appeared even more like a heavenly, jade-like gentleman.
"I'm not just stepping out to enjoy the greenery, I plan to visit Lane Street in the eastern city district," Xuan Yuan was willing to share his itinerary with Lady Li. Her heartfelt affection for Lin Xuanzhu was an entirely new experience for him.
Therefore, when Lady Li inquired, he was willing to be transparent about his plans. Whether Lady Li was aware or not wouldn't affect his intentions.
The expression on Lady Li's face shifted abruptly. A flash of severity crossed her eyes, carrying a hint of anger, not towards Lin Xuanzhu, but at the indiscreet servants who had leaked such scandalous affairs, causing Lin Xuanzhu unnecessary concern.
Taking a calming breath, Lady Li quelled her anger, still looking at Xuan Yuan with tender affection. She asked in a gentle voice, "Why does my dear son wish to venture there? Could it be that he has close friends there and intends to visit them?"
"Mother, you understand why I'm heading there," Xuan Yuan slightly shook his head, uttering this cryptic sentence as though presenting a riddle.
Indeed, Lin Yingjie and his concubine mother were stationed in a residence on Lane Street in the eastern city district by Luoning Marquis. While Lin Xuanzhu may have truly been in the dark about this matter, Xuan Yuan knew that Lady Li was certainly aware of it.
"Why should my son visit such an unsavory place?" Lady Li was irritated at whoever had surreptitiously informed Lin Xuanzhu about this matter. She was indifferent to the fact that Luoning Marquis had an external concubine; she didn't see it as a threat to her. However, she didn't want her son to have any ties with the concubine's family.
Xuan Yuan gave a faint smile, a sharpness emerging in his gaze, and he simply stated, "Naturally, I'm going to meet my half-brother."
