The child beamed himself away from the hostile cruiser cause the father figured someone would lead him to a trap he probably didnt have time too program a specific location on the ship though. Presumably it has too be a child because the servant has too be alive for the machine too function and judging be the dead one we see its there for as long as possible. Yea the Enterprise ships usually go for the Retro futuristic type vibes. But most of the other ships like discovery and voyager go for a mixture between Naval ship design and the same futuristic style.
