Freighters in early space travel are usually slow in all sci-fi they are usually the last to upgraded with a bigger engine because like in real life they are forced to be slow because of the amount of tonnes they are hauling slows them down . Thats why they become generational ships with families living aboard because it would be years before they return home after a long cargo haul.
