They don’t want to show new cast that may be joining before you’ve met them, or which cast may be leaving. It’s not a joke though, the actor got a lead in another show and he stepped away from alias for that so they wrote him off. Also him and Jennifer dated in real life during upto like sometime in season 4, but they’d broken it off before season 5 and he found it hard to continue working with her. And Sidney’s pregnancy was written into show because she was pregnant in real life with her new partner in real life, and rather than leave her out for the season, they wrote it into storylines.
