I think they need them, for there will be places you cant bring a ship. Especially, if they get the atmosphere updates where dust can fly into your vents and so on. However, do we need it now? Nope. Still CIG has always done things for the future. For some of those bases with turrets, you could load them up in a ground vehicle and get back on the ship with no shots fired.
